Tyre checks made simple

Give your tyres a quick check regularly!

Pressure: Keep your tyres inflated to the level in your handbook. Underinflated tyres handle worse and burn more fuel.

Sidewalls: Look for cracks (a sign the rubber's ageing) or heavy kerbing; both can weaken the tyre.

Tread depth: The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round. But don't wait that long; below 3mm, wet-weather braking distances shoot up, so it's worth replacing tyres sooner. If tread is near the wear bar, bring it in for a professional check at Harts.

Even wear: Wearing more on one side? That usually points to an alignment issue, worth catching early, as it can save you from replacing the front tyres altogether.
