🐴🚨 ANOTHER HORSE TRAILER LEAVING UNTHANK TRAILERS SAFE & SOUND! 🚨

We had this Ifor Williams HB511 horse trailer in our workshop for its first yearly service with us.

Once we got the trailer into our workshop and up on the lift so we could inspect it properly, we soon discovered there was more going on underneath than first met the eye… 👀

There had been a LOT of grease used underneath on the cables — in fact, far too much!

But as we stripped the trailer down, we found:

🔧 Bearings with excessive wear
🛑 Brake shoes worn unevenly
⚙️ Brake cables starting to seize
💥 Failed damper — the brakes had been set up incorrectly on the hubs and weren’t balanced correctly on the break bar
🚨 Damaged breakaway cable
🧹 Years of built-up brake dust on the back plates, showing the brake shoes hadn’t been removed and properly inspected for a very long time

Just because something has been sprayed with grease doesn’t mean it’s been serviced properly! ❌

A proper horse trailer service means stripping things down, inspecting the components properly and making sure the brakes, bearings, cables, suspension and safety systems are all working as they should.

This trailer has now had all the necessary new parts, been thoroughly cleaned and had grease applied only where it is actually needed.

Most importantly, the brakes are now set up correctly and properly balanced — and our customer can genuinely feel the difference when towing. 👍

One of our favourites — and for very good reason!

The PT56 is an ideal size for so many people. At 16ft x 7ft, it’s not too long or oversized, but still gives you plenty of room for most jobs. 🐴⚠️ WHEN A HORSE TRAILER RAMP GIVES WAY…

This week we had a bit of a shock in the workshop.

This Ifor Williams horse trailer came to us after the front ramp completely gave way while a horse was being unloaded.

Thankfully, the horse and everyone involved were absolutely fine. ❤️🐴 But it could have ended very differently.

What makes this story even more concerning is that our customer had only purchased the trailer in March. We were both genuinely shocked at the condition of the panel and the extent of the rot.

When the trailer came to us, the extent of the rot was already clear. Once we inspected and removed the damaged section, we could see just how badly the panel had deteriorated.

Our customer was understandably shaken up, but the good news is we were able to replace the damaged panel with a new one, and the trailer is now safe and ready to go. ✅

It’s a great reminder that rot in horse trailer ramps and panels can become a serious safety issue. And unfortunately, it’s something we’re seeing more and more of, even on newer trailers.

🛞 A few trailers through the workshop this week for servicing! 🔧

One thing they all had in common… the tyres were well and truly ready for replacement! 😬

We found plenty of cracking in the tread and sidewalls, with many of the tyres being the originals and over 20 years old! 😳

New tyres fitted, everything checked over and these trailers are now road-ready, safe and legal ✅🚛
