Are We Asking Too Much of Driving Instructors… or Just Not Understanding the Job?

Everyone thinks they know what we do.
Sit there.
Give directions.
Get someone through a test.

Simple.
That version of the job does not exist anymore.

Every lesson is pressure.
Real roads.
Real risk.
Real consequences.

We are not just watching traffic.
We are predicting it.
Preventing it.
Intervening in seconds when it goes wrong.

And at the same time…
We are managing anxiety.
Panic.
Overthinking.
Confidence that disappears mid-roundabout.

We are adapting for neurodivergent learners.
Rebuilding people after collisions.
Supporting adults who have not driven in years.
Sitting beside someone whose hands are shaking before the engine even starts.
Giving pupils the tools to keep themselves safe after passing their practical test and for the rest of their driving career.

But here is the part no one talks about.
We are expected to do all of that…
calmly…
consistently…
professionally…

While the world outside the car gets worse.
🚘 Costs rising
⏰ Test delays stretching months
📱 Drivers distracted and impatient
🧠 Learners under more pressure than ever

And still…
People think we are “just instructors.”

No.
We are risk managers.
We are decision makers.
We are the barrier between a mistake and a collision.

And most of it goes unseen.
So next time you get frustrated behind a learner car, ask yourself this:

Would you want that responsibility?
Would you want to sit there, knowing one missed moment could change everything?

This is not just a job anymore.
It is responsibility at a level most people will never experience.

Why we sometimes say NO when pupils THINK they're ready for test.

We really do try to help our pupils although some pupils have other thoughts
As driving instructors we can only advise people about their readiness to take a test!

You may think you are driving well when the instructor is:

Telling you when to change gear!
Asking you what the speed limit is!
Talking you through every manoeuvre!
Telling you which lane to be in!
Reminding you which exit to come off of on a roundabout because you forget!
Helping you when you can’t workout if there is enough space for you to get your car through!

If all or any of the above apply to you, then you are not test ready!

When the door shuts and it’s just you and the examiner, the car is the loneliest place to be, when you make a mistake and your brain goes to mush it’s the worst feeling ever!

Remember those family and friends who urge you to just have a go for the experience, aren’t the ones having to go through it, people have very selective memory’s when it comes to driving and tests!

Ask anyone who has failed a test if it was a nice experience!
Remember it’s YOU doing the test, no one else, no phone to google answers, no help from anyone else just YOU!

If you are up to standard, you will still be nervous, but you won’t be doubtful of your ability!

Go look in the mirror and have a straight talk with yourself!
Would you take an A level if you hadn’t studied enough and then expect to pass it?

My good good good friend Subhaan certainly is as he got the opportunity to sit his driving test today and he smassssssshed it out the park. Copied from another instructor

I have been told more than once that my job is easy.
That all I do is sit in a car and tell people where to turn.
So let me explain.
I did not just wake up one morning and become a driving instructor.
I passed three separate tests before I was even recognised as qualified to teach.
Every day I deal with pupils who get upset and frustrated.
Pupils who laugh after nearly causing a serious incident.
I still show up. I still smile.
I still carry on.
I deal with parents questioning progress, booking tests without asking whether their child is ready, and expecting me to let them “have a go” on a real test when the basics are not there.
I still smile. I still carry on.
I deal with other drivers intimidating learners, cutting across them, tailgating them, and performing dangerous manoeuvres while I am managing risk, keeping the pupil calm, and preventing something going very wrong.
I still smile. I still carry on.
Every pupil is different.
Some freeze. Some panic.
Some give up.
Some simply do not understand the first explanation.
My job is to find another way.
Then another.
Then another again until it finally clicks.
I still smile. I still carry on.
I teach pupils with anxiety, ADHD, physical disabilities, learning difficulties, and complex needs.
I adapt. I slow down.
I change my approach.
I do everything I can to help them succeed safely.
I still smile. I still carry on.
This is only a small part of what the job actually involves.
Ask yourself this.
Could you explain every single thing you do when you drive?
Every decision. Every observation. Every reaction.
Miss one small detail and that is the difference between understanding and confusion.
Could you stay calm with an overbearing parent demanding answers.
Could you stay calm when a pupil does not stop and you have a split second to prevent a collision.
Could you stay calm after getting up early to accommodate someone who cancels at the last minute.
This is the reality of our world.
I smile and carry on because when one pupil passes and you see that smile.
When the tears come.
When the message arrives saying they got the job they needed a licence for.
That is when I know I have changed a life.
So yes. I smile and I carry on.
But make no mistake.
THIS JOB IS ANYTHING BUT EASY

We (instructors) get asked
When will I be ready for test?

THIS IS WHEN

When you start learning your instructor is taking you from the unknown to the known

From doing things consciously (thinking about what you need to do and how yo do it)
To do things subconsciously (doing things naturally)

This is the moment in learning to drive that most people do not notice at first.

You stop waiting for reassurance.

You just… do it.

Not because you suddenly know everything.
Not because you are perfect.
But because your brain has started to trust what it has learned.

This is the invisible shift that happens before test readiness.

The controls feel lighter.
The decisions feel quieter.
You are no longer reacting to the road.
You are reading it.

This moment does not mean you are finished learning.
It means the foundations are solid

If your lessons felt harder before, that is normal.
It is often the sign that everything is coming together.

The confidence your instructor has kept talking about, you (the student) kept doubting is no longer a doubt you now trust and believe in YOU.

Lessons standards are set way above the test standard so that when test day comes you are ready for it. (not I might pass but YES I will pass)

NB once you have passed your driving test you then START to learn to drive. You no longer have someone sitting beside you to warn you (your second pair of eyes) of things you might miss or misjudge.
You no longer have a
'safety blanket'

🚨ATTENTION PLEASE READ 🚨

I hope you will read Dave Ramsey’s comments about going cashless. It’s a two minute read and NO one has explained it better. Please take 2 minute's and read!

YOUNGER GENERATIONS TAKE NOTE!

Dave Ramsey repost:

HERE'S WHAT NO CASH ACTUALLY MEANS:

A cashless society means no cash. Zero. It doesn’t mean mostly cashless and you can still use a ‘wee bit of cash here & there’. Cashless means fully digital, fully traceable, fully controlled. I think those who support a cashless society aren’t fully aware of what they are asking for. A cashless society means:
* If you are struggling with your mortgage on a particular month, you can’t do an odd job to get you through.
* Your child can’t go & help the local farmer to earn a bit of summer cash.
* No more cash slipped into the hands of a child as a good luck charm or from their grandparent when going on holidays.
* No more money in birthday cards.
* No more piggy banks for your child to collect pocket money & to learn about the value of earning.
* No more cash for a rainy day fund or for that something special you have been putting £20 a week away for.
* No more little jobs on the side because your wages barely cover the bills or put food on the table.
* No more charity collections.
* No more selling bits & pieces from your home that you no longer want/need for a bit of cash in return.
* No more cash gifts from relatives or loved ones.
What a cashless society does guarantee:
* Banks have full control of every single penny you own.
* Every transaction you make is recorded.
* All your movements & actions are traceable.
* Access to your money can be blocked at the click of a button when/if banks need ‘clarification’ from you which will take about 3 weeks, a thousand questions answered & five thousand passwords.
* You will have no choice but to declare & be taxed on every dollar in your possession.
* The government WILL decide what you can & cannot purchase.
* If your transactions are deemed in any way questionable, by those who create the questions, your money will be frozen, ‘for your own good’.

Forget about cash being dirty. Stop being so easily led. Cash has been around for a very, very, very long time & it gives you control over how you trade with the world. It gives you independence. I heard a story where a man supposedly contracted Covid because of a £20 note he had handled. There is the same chance of Covid being on a card as being on cash. If you cannot see how utterly ridiculous this assumption is then there is little hope.
If you are a customer, pay with cash. If you are a shop owner, remove those ridiculous signs that ask people to pay by card. Cash is a legal tender, it is our right to pay with cash. Banks are making it increasingly difficult to lodge cash & that has nothing to do with a virus, nor has this ‘dirty money’ trend.

Please open your eyes. Please stop believing everything you are being told. Almost every single topic in today’s world is tainted with corruption & hidden agendas. Please stop telling me & others like me that we are what’s wrong with the world when you hail the most corrupt members of society as your heroes.

Politics & greed is what is wrong with the world; not those who are trying to alert you to the reality in which you are blindly floating along whilst being immobilised by irrational fear. Fear created to keep you doing & believing in exactly what you are complacently doing.

Pay with cash & please say no to a cashless society while you still have the choice.

Ladies and gents. Another beautiful day another driving test.
Today was the chance for my good good good friend Reece to show if he has the skill and knowledge to pass the toughest test in town. The Driving Test !
And he did not disappoint us.
Yup he smassssssssssshed it out the park
The examiner was extremely pleased with his efforts and passed Reece with ease.
So a first time pass making only one driving fault which he corrected but he made the fault so she took the point.
What a fantastic drive pal. Iam so so happy for you.
Enjoy shopping for your new car…🚘🏁👍🏼🎉.
