Passing a driving test is an exciting milestone.

But it takes time to gain the necessary experience to drive safely, with newly qualified drivers aged 17-24 at a greater risk of being involved in a collision.

If you’re a parent or carer of someone who’s just passed their test, there are simple things you can do to help them stay safe on the road:

• Encourage them to always wear a seatbelt.
• Discourage them from taking friends as passengers in the first few months, as it can be distracting and increase risky behaviour.
• Drive together regularly, including on motorways and at nighttime, to build experience.
• Set a good example and stick to speed limits.

We’re committed to improving road safety, and your conversations at home can make a real difference in helping young drivers develop good habits behind the wheel.

Keep an eye on our socials as we continue to carry out operations to target dangerous drivers and improve road safety.

What advice would you give to newly qualified drivers? Tell us in the comments.
