Why I Don’t Hire Help?

Every single day in my shop when a NEW customer calls and I tell them they have a 6-10 week wait to get in, I hear over and over: “You need to hire some help.”

So I’ll address this:

First, my shop has always been about Quality of work, NOT Quantity of work I can get in and out. My hands are the only ones that touch my customers bikes, and that is the exact reason why “most” of my regulars will wait as long as it takes to get in.

Second, I am a perfectionist with everything I do, and chances are, if a person on the street is in need of a job, there is likely a reason they are not employed, so why would I want to hire that person in my shop?

Third, and what many don’t think about, how do you feel as a customer, knowing that a shop with employees is charging you shop hourly labor rate of likely £50-£100 an hour or more, and have a hire on that is being paid £10-£15 an hour working on your pride and joy? I know I wouldn’t appreciate that and I’m guessing you wouldn’t either. So no, I’m not gonna do that.

So this is why I don’t hire help and why my regular customers will wait, weeks or months, so only my hands touch their machine. If you don’t care about the above, most all other shops have hired help and can get you in very quickly. The choice is yours.

With that said, of course there are many excellent mechanics out there. If you happen to find one, stick with them.
