English Electric Lightning Cockpit rig project

English Electric Lightning Cockpit rig project Page dedicated to the scratch build of an EE Lightning F1a c**kpit rig.

30/11/2024

Morning all.

So after long consideration and the current situation with work, more so the facility use. It’s not practical to carry on with this build project, the elephant in the room is my impending marriage to the good lady. The time has come to downsize my collection and assets for the wedding costs.

This hasn’t been a decision taken lightly due to the love and passion for this project and others in the pipeline. So the project is up for sale, included in the sale is as follows:

Martin baker mk4bSc seat with some safety kit and most parts needed to make it complete.

Canopy in perfect condition

Windscreen original to XN774

Main instrument panel

Engine panel

Console panels

Coaming panels

Control column and base minus stick top

Control column centre pedestal

Radar, crate and rubber boot

Radar hand controller

Gun sight and camera assembly

Left hand quarter panel original to F1

Relight panel

Throttle for F1/1a

Right hand warning panel

Left hand warning panel

Basically everything I have for the project on this page minus the stick top.

Please bear in mind that it is collection only upon completion of sale and a collection of drawings for the structure and other parts are included that we made.

Asking price is £6000 or serious offer. Where else can you find a rig build for an F1a? Many thanks for all those who have helped and supported the project thus far. Cheers all

That’s the centre console and control column housing made, fitted, painted and finished. Absolutely made up with this, the old man’s handy work at its finest with even the added effect of aileron and rudder control with the stick / column fitted. Fantastic!

But more done on the centre console with the control column base. Placed the stick in just for a dry run, not fitted properly as I have to make the ball joint assembly yet. Looking good so far

It’s been a fun journey so far collecting these parts be it sales, swaps or gifts. Thank you to all for your help so far, had a play with what parts I’ve sourced so far.

This evening saw me laying out the brief example of the port side console and throttle area. Looking very good so far.

Also laid out the anti g equipment I’ve sourced for the project, surprisingly I’d forgot I had the stop c**k til this evening.
Also the ILS and radio set for the project.

More drawing of parts and the side consoles taking place, the old man has been working his magic again designing the oxygen contents panel and starboard console panel. Also had a stab at the port side structure. Taking shape now.

Also with thanks to Hugh Trevor I have some really useful reference shots of the F1a layout, hopefully this will be something like at the end. Thanks

A great day for the project.

Visited a good friend and huge helper to the project, Mr Darren Swinn over in former RAF Binbrook.

Darren has kindly donated much needed parts and loaned harder to find parts for me to copy in time. I’ve loaned him my windscreen removed from XN774 to measure and copy for his son Karl’s F6 project XR726 and for him to keep the main F6 type structure as a trade against parts for both projects.

I can’t thank Darren enough for all his help with the project and parts donated, swapped or traded. The end result will see XN728, XR726 and my mock of XM137 all benefit going forward. Many thanks to him and his own projects which are on Facebook so take a look!

The parts loaned included:
Centre console assembly / structure
Side console panels
Foot well panels
Armed time panel
Weapons selector k**b and plastic front for the weapons.

Parts swapped and donated are:
Side panels and floor panels
Two c**kpit lamps
F1/1a FRCs
Original mk1/2 fuel pumps switch guard, incredibly rare!
Fuel gauges
Lots of parts to help with builds

Also on a separate matter i remembered buying a lightning type rear view mirror also which I’ve only just found in a box.

Great day with a great chap, many thanks Darren.

Hi all,

As work continues on the rig I’m putting together a list of wants for the project. Happy to swap or purchase parts where available, first part I’m trying to hunt down is the firestreak armed time indicator fitted to the early lightnings that carried firestreak and also the sea vixen / javelin. Any help on one would be a huge help to the project.

Thanks and as always if there are any parts that people may have available please get in touch.
