As the automotive industry continues to evolve, ensuring the workforce has the skills to support new and emerging technologies is more important than ever.

Since 2022, Blackburn College's HEAT(Hybrid Electric Automotive Training) facility has been helping to close the skills gap in low-carbon vehicle maintenance and repair, equipping the next generation of technicians with the knowledge and hands-on experience they need to succeed.

In this month’s Centre Spotlight, discover how Blackburn College is playing a vital role in futureproofing the automotive sector and supporting the transition to greener technologies.

The IMI welcomes the government’s response to the consultation on the introduction of electric Vehicle Excise Duty, which reflects several practical recommendations made by the IMI.

The decision to rule out mandatory telematics, use existing VED and DVLA systems, anchor mileage validation in the MOT, and introduce simple reconciliation arrangements all represent pragmatic steps towards implementation.

However, one critical delivery risk remains unresolved - the assumption that every MOT garage will be equipped to deal with EV mileage anomalies.

As Nick Connor, CEO of the IMI, explains, reading a dashboard odometer is one thing. Investigating disputed, missing or potentially tampered mileage readings on an electric vehicle is quite another. Diagnostic capability varies significantly across the MOT network, and without clear escalation routes, competence-based accreditation, standards aligned with IMI TechSafe, and support for garages on equipment and training, disputes could fall inconsistently on garages, motorists and the DVLA.

The IMI will continue to engage with government as the detailed design of eVED progresses, ensuring the automotive workforce and the businesses responsible for mileage verification are properly represented.

Help Shape the Future of the IMI Website

We're redesigning the navigation menu on the IMI website and would love to hear from people who use the site regularly.

Join one of our informal user testing workshops, where we'll walk you through the current navigation menu and several new prototype designs we're considering. We'll be looking for your honest first impressions on things like usability, clarity and ease of navigation.

There’s no preparation needed, no technical knowledge required, and no right or wrong answers — we simply want your feedback to help us create a better experience for our users.

During the session, you'll be asked to review the different options and complete a short feedback document to share your thoughts and suggestions.

The IMI’s CEO Nick Connor has written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Pat McFadden MP, alongside senior automotive industry leaders, to raise shared concerns about current apprenticeship reform proposals.

Automotive apprenticeships are critical to building a skilled, competent and safety-conscious workforce, particularly as the sector responds to rapid technological change across electric vehicles, connected and digital systems, and emerging hydrogen technologies. At a time when vehicles are becoming more complex, the need for rigorous training and robust, independent assessment is increasing, not reducing.

In our open letter, the IMI and signatories call for reform that:
• Maintains rigorous, independent end-point assessment
• Protects the depth and quality of training required to achieve real occupational competence
• Ensures standards reflect the safety-critical nature of automotive work
• Respects employer-led recommendations throughout approval and reform processes

Reform should strengthen apprenticeships, not dilute them. With the right safeguards in place, we can create a system that is responsive and flexible while protecting public safety, workforce capability and employer confidence.

If your organisation shares these concerns and would like to join the IMI and industry partners in supporting this call at a later stage, please get in touch with the IMI’s Public Affairs and Research team.
