* THE LAST OF ENGLAND *

We can't help but be besotted with our beautiful county, but as history and literature show, we are not the only ones.

Herefordshire was one of the handful of places deemed worth mentioning outside of Jerusalem on the Mappa Mundi, created back in 1300s by monk Richard of Haldingham or Lafford, and now proudly displayed in Hereford Cathedral. Well, who came blame him, it is heaven on Earth!

British poet, Edward Thomas, also became besotted with Herefordshire, where “the land was sweet”. For him, Herefordshire was “This England”, and his love for it imposed a duty of protection.

He and fellow poet Robert Frost famously walked together around Dymock, Much Marcle and May Hill as their friendship blossomed.

As penned by Frost in The Thatch, "Here, all is right in the world". We couldn't have said it better ourselves

'This is a hoard of enormous historical significance both for Herefordshire and for the nation as a whole. The hoard raises many questions for our understanding of the period and those questions can only be answered in full if the hoard is secured for posterity in a museum collection. Given the find spot of the hoard, Herefordshire Museum is the obvious home for this important discovery'.
