Modern automotive is no longer just about mechanics. Today, everything revolves around data, sensors and emissions control.

Engine management systems are now key to vehicle efficiency.

What are we dealing with most often today?
✔️ knock sensors
✔️ air mass meters
✔️ high-pressure fuel pumps
✔️ injectors
✔️ control units

And the trend is clear — more and more repairs are moving into the field of electronics and power electronics.

With the rise of EVs and hybrid vehicles, the importance of the following continues to grow:
⚡ control units
⚡ actuators
⚡ sensors
⚡ repair kits for electronic modules

The automotive aftermarket is changing faster than ever before.

The evolution of wheel bearings is a perfect example of how the automotive industry is changing.
In the past:
🔧 tapered roller bearings
🔧 Generation 1 bearings — pressed in and out

Today:
✅ complete wheel bearing modules
✅ simple bolt-in solutions

Why?
Because manufacturers demand:
✔ faster assembly
✔ easier servicing
✔ improved production efficiency

Modern automotive engineering is no longer just about individual components — it’s about efficiency, modularity and smarter system design.

Here's a brief glimpse into the life of one of our colleagues, Alistair Mason.

Alistair is our technical manager/guru and if he's not training the next generation of technicians, he's supporting garages, attending industry events or meeting REPXPERT members across the UK.

We believe the best support happens in person – listening, sharing knowledge, answering questions, and helping workshops stay ahead of the latest vehicle technologies.

One thing remains the same wherever we go – we're supporting the automotive aftermarket.

The automotive industry is undergoing a massive transformation — and it’s not just about electric vehicles. Modern internal combustion engines are now significantly more efficient than ever before.

What are we seeing in practice today? 👀

✔️ Cylinder on Demand — deactivating cylinders under low load
✔️ Variable valve timing
✔️ Switchable camshaft technology
✔️ Smarter engine thermal management

The result? Lower emissions, reduced fuel consumption, and faster engine warm-up.

Thermal management also plays a major role today — controlling different engine systems at different temperatures for maximum efficiency.

And these technologies are increasingly making their way into the aftermarket as well.

Heads Up! 🤗

🔧 VW U3 Bushes: Cause of creaking and squeaking noises?

The VW U3 bushes is a special rubber-to-metal bush in the suspension, also known as a silent bush. It is mainly used within the Volkswagen Group — especially in sporty models such as the Golf GTI Clubsport S.

Its function:
It connects the front control arm to the body.

Compared with standard bushes, the U3 bush has a significantly different design. As a result, creaking or squeaking noises may occur when driving over bumps at the front of the vehicle.

Important:
These noises do not automatically indicate a defect. In many cases, the noise comes directly from the U3 bush itself.

✅ Recommended remedy according to the vehicle manufacturer:
Apply 1 gram of special lithium grease (G 052 150 A2) into all kidney-shaped openings of the bush.
To do this, the control arm must be removed.

💡 As a preventive measure, this greasing can also be performed on new control arms or bushes.

Today’s vehicles don’t just rely on nuts, bolts and moving parts anymore. They run on sensors, software and intelligent actuators.

From emissions control to EV systems, electronics are driving one of the biggest transformations the automotive aftermarket has ever seen.

A great example of this evolution is the Schaeffler Vitesco range of actuators — helping workshops meet the demands of modern vehicle technology with smarter, more efficient solutions.

Throwback to our Wrenches & Wisdom initiative, where we visit apprentices and provide them free training.

It's a campaign that's extremely important at Schaeffler, as the next generation coming into our industry needs all the support we can offer.

We've documented a few of the training sessions we provided over the last couple of years to showcase how important this support is: https://spkl.io/Schaeffler/618978ys1

Electric motor repairs are becoming a real aftermarket opportunity.

The new Schaeffler E-Axle Repair Tool allows workshops to safely repair EV drive systems without damaging the sensitive rotor and stator components.

Instead of replacing complete e-axles, workshops can now:
✔️ replace bearings
✔️ repair components
✔️ reduce repair costs
✔️ support a circular economy

The future of EV servicing is shifting from replacement to professional repairs.

How many clutch or gearbox issues actually start with a worn Dual Mass Flywheel?

Modern engines produce more torque at a lower RPM than ever before — which puts huge stress on the drivetrain.

That’s why DMFs have become critical in today’s vehicles.

But here’s the challenge:
A faulty DMF is often misdiagnosed, leading to repeat repairs, vibration complaints and unnecessary costs.

👉 Proper testing and inspection matter more than ever.

You can find useful tips on REPXPERT - all of this helping workshops diagnose problems correctly, while avoiding costly comebacks.

Heads up: it’s .

On OM 651 ### engines (model years 2009–2018), two different timing chain guides were installed from the factory. They mainly differ by length: 154 mm and 194 mm.

Because the vehicle manufacturers do not clearly assign the guide length to a specific model year or engine version, you must check which guide length is currently installed before starting the repair.

Both lengths are included in repair kits 559 1003 20 and 559 1003 30, and in the kit family 559 1003 **. When replacing the guide, always install the same length as the part removed.
