All tuning files are the same? We politely disagree! This customer came to us having had his VW Scirocco tuned elsewhere, and despite being told its now 220hp, he couldn't feel much difference. The figures speak for themselves:

- OEM (VW) Claimed: 184hp & 380Nm
- 3rd Party Tuned file: 190hp & 394Nm
- Vehicle returned to stock: 183hp & 387Nm
- JR Tuning Engine & Gearbox tune: 232hp & 454Nm

BMW 125d in first with Wealden Garage Ltd for new brakes all round and then straight over to us for a Stage 1 tuning session. Mega power can be safely achieved out of the 25d 2.0 diesel and now with the brakes to stop it too!

Another example as to why throwing a cheap tune on your car without any health checks is a terrible idea!

This Vauxhall Corsa 1.0T came in for Stage1, but failed to pass our initial checks. Whilst it got close to the OEM claimed power figures of 115hp & 170Nm, just look at the power curve! I've seen less peaks on a mountain range!

Tuning this car would have at best exaggerated the mechanical fault, and worse case caused a total failure.

Whilst it was disappointing not to be able to sell the customer a tune to put a smile on his face on this occasion, sending it away to be fixed first is the correct thing to do.

A clear example of why data logging your vehicle is part of our tuning process to ensure a safe remap experience. This VW Caddy 1.9 TDI came in this morning but left without a tune after we picked up on boost control issues.

The turbo is very slow to build boost, and then at higher RPM ends up overboosting. It's very common for these variable geometry turbos to get the vanes stuck in the mid-boost position due to carbon buildup within the turbo housing. Tuning then increases the exhaust pressure, and they overboost to the point of failure.

The customer will be back once the turbo issues have been dealt with, which will allow us to safely tune his vehicle. The last thing we'd want to do, is to tune the vehicle as is, only for it to fail a few miles later.

Abarth 595 1.4 TJET in for map correction. Tuned elsewhere with a sports catalyst, it was failing its MOT emissions test. Analysis of the calibration showed numerous issues. Firstly an inability to hold the RPM within the MOT test window thanks to poor throttle control and then rich fueling due to poor changes made to the Lambda tables.

Reverted back to stock, and then tuned as we normally would it was then tested on an MOT emissions tester (thanks to Wealden Garage Ltd), and all was good. CO @ 0.15 (allowed 0.20), HC @ 40 (allowed 200) and Lambda at 1.012 (Allowed between 0.97 & 1.030).

Remember, just because your car goes faster, doesn't mean the calibration is good and the car is running well.!

What is Gearbox tuning?
Similar to an ECU remap, a gearbox remap is modified software for the TCU (Transmission Control Unit).

What does it do?
Gearbox remapping results vary depending on the type of gearbox but typically speeds up gear shifts, improves transmission lockup and raises the internal torque limits to allow for a stronger engine tune without slipping the auto transmissions clutches.

How is Gearbox tuning installed?
Just like ECU remapping, TCU remapping is typically carried out either via the vehicles OBD socket or on the edge connector of the transmission (bench mode). This often requires access underneath the vehicle in order to plug directly into the gearbox.
