🔧 VW Golf 2.0 TDI – Turbo Failure & Severe Oil/Carbon Contamination
This VW Golf 2.0 TDI came into us with an unusual noise coming from the turbo. Once we started investigating, it quickly became clear that this wasn’t going to be a simple turbo replacement.
The turbocharger had suffered a major internal failure, with the exhaust-side turbine completely separating from the shaft. As a result, excessive engine oil had been allowed into the exhaust system, heavily contaminating and blocking the DPF.
Once we stripped the engine further, we uncovered another major issue — extreme carbon, sludge and oil build-up throughout the engine, including around the rocker/camshaft area, oil filter housing and sump. As you can see from the pictures, some areas were almost completely packed with thick deposits.
⚠️ This is why regular servicing and using the correct specification oil is so important.
Over a long period, poor or extended servicing can allow oil to degrade and sludge to build up. This can restrict vital oilways and oil flow, potentially starving components such as the turbocharger of proper lubrication and eventually contributing to expensive failures.
Rather than simply fitting a turbo and sending the vehicle back out, we stripped everything down, inspected the engine and cleaned out as much contamination as possible, addressing the underlying problems caused by the failure.
After a lot of cleaning, repairs and rebuilding, we managed to bring this 2.0 TDI back to life and get it running again. 🔧✅
A great example of why preventative maintenance is always cheaper than repairing the damage caused when servicing is neglected.
