CERAMIC OR PPF FOR HEADLIGHTS? 😎

Getting the headlights clear again is only half the job. Once they’ve been properly prepared and polished, you’ve got to decide how you want to keep them that way.

Ceramic coating is a good option if you want a clean, protected finish and can last up to two years.

If you’re after something more long term, PPF gives the headlights physical film protection and can last three years plus.

And this is where it gets a bit more interesting.

PPF doesn’t have to mean just plain clear film. We’ve got three options available. Standard clear PPF, one that develops a smoky grey tint in sunlight, and another that gives off a subtle violet tint when the sun hits it.

So you can keep the original clear look, or give the headlights a slightly different character while protecting them at the same time.

A fresh colour can completely change the look behind the wheels. But the real quality of brake caliper painting isn’t only about how good it looks when the car leaves the unit.

It’s about how that finish holds up afterwards.

Proper preparation, the right materials and correct application all matter. That’s what you’re paying for when you choose quality over simply finding the cheapest option.

Because saving money on the day doesn’t feel like much of a saving if the paint starts peeling or flaking later.

WHY DOES CALIPER PAINT PEEL? 👀

You can make brake calipers look fresh quite quickly. Clean them up, put some paint on and from the outside, job done.

But how will they look months later?

If the old coating, corrosion and contamination haven’t been properly removed, fresh paint is only sitting on top of the problem.

For our brake caliper painting, we take the surface back to bare metal first. Then comes a heat-resistant adhesion primer, followed by three coats of paint rated up to 650°C.

Most of the work people don’t see is in the preparation.

And that preparation can be the difference between calipers that still look good and paint that starts peeling and flaking later.

ONE SCRATCH. FULL REPAINT?

A scratch can look small and still need a full panel repaint. Another one can look much worse, be deeper and larger, and still be suitable for a local repair.

That’s exactly why you can’t judge the repair just by the size of the damage.

This wing had a deep scratch with quite significant paint damage. After examination, we decided that a local repair was still realistic, so the area was repaired, levelled and finished without repainting the whole wing.

But that won’t be the right answer for every deep scratch.

Sometimes the damage has gone too far, sometimes the position makes a local repair unrealistic, sometimes there’s distortion or a dent, and sometimes the final result simply wouldn’t justify doing a touch up instead of repainting the panel properly.

So there isn’t one rule for every scratch.

A small scratch can need a repaint.
A bigger deep scratch can sometimes still be repaired locally.

The only proper way to decide is to examine the damage first and see how deep and how complex the problem really is.

Ross has been with Carvex 8 before, so it’s always good to see the same car coming back through our doors.

This visit was for brake caliper painting in bright banana yellow, a bold and popular choice that stands out perfectly against the white bodywork, together with our professional car wash.

TOUCH UP. NOT A FACTORY FINISH. 👀

A professional touch up can make a scratch or stone chip look massively better, but it’s important to know what result you’re actually paying for.

Touch up is a local cosmetic repair. We match the paint, carefully build the damaged area back up, level it and polish the finish to make the damage far less noticeable.

With the right type of damage, we can reduce its visibility by up to around 80%.

But 80% is not 100%.

If you’re looking for a completely invisible, factory looking finish, that normally means repainting the panel. A touch up isn’t there to pretend the damage never happened. It’s there to improve it properly without jumping straight into a full repaint when one isn’t necessary.

That’s why we always examine the damage first. Some scratches are suitable for polishing, some for touch up, and some have simply gone too far.
