Zebra crossings are designed to provide pedestrians with a safe and clearly marked place to cross the road. They are easily identified by black and white stripes and flashing amber beacons, which alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians. However, despite these safety features, risks still exist and both drivers and pedestrians must remain alert.

One of the main risks is driver inattention. Some drivers may fail to notice the crossing due to distractions such as mobile phones, passengers, or poor visibility in bad weather conditions. This can lead to late braking or failure to stop altogether. Another risk is pedestrians stepping onto the crossing without checking that vehicles have stopped, assuming they automatically have the right of way.

Parked cars near crossings can also reduce visibility, making it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians waiting to cross. Additionally, cyclists and motorcyclists may approach quickly and may not always stop in time.

To stay safe, pedestrians should always look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Drivers must approach zebra crossings at a controlled speed, be prepared to stop, and remain vigilant at all times. Mutual awareness and responsibility are key to reducing accidents.
