Car Profile Art

Car Profile Art Hand painted historically significant F1 cars created by former McLaren design engineer (1980-2005), Matthew Jeffreys. Many McLarens, but also other marques.

Email: [email protected] Car Profile Art depict hand painted historically significant F1 cars. Each print depicts an image taken from one of my original paintings created in acrylic paints on stretched 300gsm cotton watercolour paper. Initial illustrations are of McLaren F1 cars but the intention is that other marques will be added over time. Full size, the cars are painted in 1/12th scale an

d as close as possible to faithful reproductions of the specifications of the real cars at specific races. Smaller scale prints are available for those wanting to create 'Desk Art' with back to back prints in acrylic or Perspex photo frames. All enquiries to [email protected]

One of the 1/12th scale signed limited edition print examples the McLaren Honda MP4/4 engineering collection.

There are currently six print options available, three of which have been signed by chief designer Steve Nichols as well as myself:

The first 460mm x 325mm 1/12th scale print features the general assembly of the internal turbo inlet configuration of the car depicting both Alain's and Ayrton's driving positions on one print; the second 460mm x 325mm 1/12th scale print shows the Senna engineering drawing above his painted Belgian GP version, as depicted here in the photo; the third option is a 1/18th scale version of the second option. Three other variants based on signatures and the hand embellishment of the Alain and Ayrton general assembly views that include notes and labels.

The prices of the various collection print options are available by emailing me at:

As project leader for the forward monocoque, front suspension, driver installation and nose assembly, the engineering drawing was one I have always been keen to complete.

Back in late '87 and early '88 we didn't have time to complete a general assembly drawing of the car so this is the first time such a drawing has ever been produced by someone on the design team. It is hand drawn on a drawing board (just like the original car was) reconstructed from personal notes and known dimensions making it an accurate and authentic reproduction of the car and engine in 1/12th scale.

My next subject: James Hunt in the McLaren M23 from the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix. Update No. 3

1976 was the first season that 'skirts' appeared on F1 cars. McLaren were one of the first to attach urethane strips along the sides of the monocoque (forming a Vee shape under the front) that 'discouraged' the air from going under the car, thereby creating a slightly lower pressure region that marginally improved downforce. Whilst this development was in no way as effective as Lotus's gound-effect cars that first appeared in 1977 (I.e. the Lotus 78) it did create enough of an advantage to be worthwhile. These strips rubbed on the track and had to be frequently replaced.

Eagle-eyed observers of photos from race day may have noticed that prior to going to the grid, extra tape was added to further secure these panels. You can tell photos from the morning 'warm up (!)' as the tape didn't extend to the first '1' in thd number '11'.

The winner of the 1976 Drivers' World Championship was to be decided at the final race at the Fuji circuit in Japan. Going into the race, Niki Lauda had a 3 point lead over James, who therefore needed to finish fourth or higher after Niki retired on lap 1 due to not being able to see properly in the appalling weather; a consequence of his Nürburgring injuries.

James looked as though he would win the race easily, taking an early lead. However, with less than 10 laps to go he suffered punctures through worn tyres and was forced to pit.. He rejoined in 5th place and passed two cars to finish 3rd and win the championship... without realising it!!

The heroes of the pitstop were Ray Grant, Howard Moore, Dave Ryan, Steve Bunn, Mark Scott, Lance Gibbs, Sal Incandella, John Hornby, Roy Reader and team manager Alastair Caldwell. They had to pick the front of the car up by hand initially as they couldn't get the jack under the nose with two flat front tyres..

All being well, I hope to get a few of those famous names on my limited edition prints in the coming weeks.

My next subject: James Hunt in the McLaren M23 from the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix. Update No. 2

I've decided to make the car as race-authentic as possible, which means painting the mechanics' hastily-prepared tape-covered closure panels to restrict the amount of cooling air able to enter the radiator ducts. The weather was appalling in '76 with low ambient temperatures. Not wanting the water or oil temperatures to drop too low, these panels were made from sheet aluminium and covered with silver duct tape. They didn't look pretty but they worked a treat and assisted James by keeping the engine operating at optimum performance.

Eagle-eyed observers of photos from race day may have noticed that prior to going to the grid, extra tape was added to further secure these panels. You can tell photos from the morning 'warm up (!)' as the tape didn't extend to the first '1' in thd number '11'.

98T NOW AVAILABLE: signed by Bob Dance

Ayrton Senna in the 1986 JPS Lotus 98T limited edition print.

I'm delighted to be able to announce that former Team Lotus chief mechanic, Bob Dance, has now very kindly signed 30 very special limited edition prints of my depiction of Ayrton in the JPS Lotus 98T.

Bob is legendary in motorsport having started with Colin Chapman in 1960 and over an initial 10 year period maintained the cars for the the likes of Graham Hill and Jim Clark. After brief spells with other teams including Brabham in the early 70s, Bob returned to Team Lotus in late 1976 and as chief mechanic assisted Mario Andretti to his world championship win in 1978. He remained with Lotus after Chapman's death in 1982 and assisted Ayrton to his first Grand Prix win in 1985 and also two Grand Prix wins in the 1986 Lotus 98T.

If you would like to enqury about purchasing one of these very special 30-only limited edition prints signed by Bob, and have not already reserved one, please email me at

[email protected]

Alternatively you may wish to purchase the print at a lower price signed by me alone. There will be 100 only of these.

Meeting Bob is always a great pleasure for me, and at the age of 91 he was as sharp as ever, recalling many hair-raising stories from an incredible career.

Still available from the MP4/4 Engineering Collection is the Alain Prost general assembly drawing above the painted French GP-winning version. The general assembly drawing and painted version feature the snorkel turbo inlet as used in the first half of the 1988 season, unlike the similar double Senna print which had the internal turbo inlets.

The 11 prints signed by Alain have now all gone, unfortunately, however there are still some of the 20-only signed by chief designer Steve Nichols and myself; to order one please email me at:

Print size is 480mm x 325mm. The prints are faithful Giclée reproductions of my original hand drawn and painted artworks.
