As we approach the holiday period, now is a good time to do your winter car checks.
Top tips are to focus on tyres (tread, pressure, maybe winter tyres), battery health (cold starts), fluids (coolant/antifreeze, screenwash), wipers (condition), and lights, plus having an emergency kit, ensuring brakes are good, and keeping your fuel tank topped up for safe, breakdown-free winter driving.
Essential Checks:
Tyres: Check tread depth (aim for 3mm+ for winter grip), pressure (drops in cold), and condition for cuts/bulges. Consider winter tyres.
Battery: Cold weather strains batteries. Test its charge, especially if over 3 years old, for reliable starting.
Fluids:
Coolant/Antifreeze: Ensure it's at the right level and strong enough to prevent freezing.
Screenwash: Top up with winter-grade fluid to deal with road grime and ice.
Engine Oil: Check level and condition.
Wipers & Windscreen: Inspect blades for damage; they should clear the screen effectively. Clean windows thoroughly.
Lights: Check all exterior lights (headlights, brake, fog, indicators) for functionality and cleanliness for visibility in dark, foggy conditions.
Brakes: Ensure pads and discs are in good shape for stopping on slippery surfaces.
Don't Forget:
Emergency Kit: Pack de-icer, scraper, warm blanket, high-vis vest, torch, and snacks.
Fuel: Keep your tank at least half full to prevent fuel lines from freezing.
Dashboard Lights: Address any warning lights immediately.
