Every now and then we get told someone else has quoted cheaper. And honestly, we don’t take it personally — we just blame VAT.

Once you hit the VAT threshold, the government basically says:
“Congrats on doing well… here’s a 20% surcharge to celebrate.”

So yes, sometimes we look more expensive.
Not because we’ve suddenly upgraded to diamond‑tipped tools,
but because VAT is glued to everything we do.

Businesses under the threshold get to enjoy life in the No VAT Club, where everything is automatically 20% cheaper. Lovely for them, slightly less lovely for us.

But here’s the important bit:
👉 We will happily try and price‑match anyone who is VAT‑registered.
Same rules, same costs, same playing field.

So if you ever wonder why we can’t match a non‑VAT price…
It’s not them.
It’s not us.
It’s just the government giving us a round of applause… and a lovely quarterly bill.

😂 Fun Fact Friday

A dashboard light that’s been glowing away since February becomes an urgent, life‑altering emergency at 8am on a Friday, precisely 24 hours before you go away for the weekend.

For six months it’s been happily illuminated, living its best life, absolutely unbothered.
Then suddenly — on the one morning the workshop is full, the MOT bay is booked solid, and the parts vans are already running late — it becomes our problem.

And not just any problem.
A “needs fixing right now because we’re driving to Cornwall tomorrow” problem.

If the light’s been on long enough to have its own birthday, get it checked before you get stressed with us for not fitting you in diagnosing and fixing last min :)

Summer Holiday Rush – Hot, Busy, and Everyone a Bit Crispy ☀️🔥🚗

It’s been that time of year, the summer holidays, when teachers, parents and everyone else try to squeeze in MOTs, services and repairs before normal life kicks back in.

At the same time, our techs have been taking their well‑earned holidays too… which means fewer hands in the workshop, more cars on the diary, and engine bays hot enough to cook lunch in. And when it’s that hot, everyone — techs included — naturally moves a bit slower and gets a bit grumpier. It’s just the reality of working in a metal box full of boiling engines.

Thank you for bearing with us while we’ve worked through the backlog in the heat and the chaos.

We’re nearly through the holiday rush now, and the team has pushed hard to keep everyone on the road.

Your patience has genuinely helped, and we appreciate it.

🔧 Ever Wonder What’s Inside Your Engine?

This exploded‑view shows every major component that keeps your car running — all separated so you can see how much is happening under the bonnet.

Each part has a job, and every job relies on proper servicing:

Cylinder head — houses valves and combustion components

Head gasket — seals the engine so compression and coolant stay where they should

Camshaft & pulleys — control valve timing

Timing belt — keeps the whole engine synchronised

Oil filter — removes debris to protect internal parts

Water pump — circulates coolant to prevent overheating

Intake & exhaust manifolds — manage airflow in and out of the engine

Oil pan — stores the oil that keeps everything lubricated

When we recommend servicing, it’s because every one of these components depends on clean oil, correct timing, healthy gaskets, and proper cooling. A service isn’t “just an oil change” — it’s how we keep all these parts working together without wearing each other out.

🔧 DIAGNOSTICS — What we actually do

When we “run diagnostics”, it’s not just plugging a car into a machine and waiting for magic. Here’s what really happens behind the scenes:

• Live data checks
We read the vehicle’s real‑time information — temperatures, pressures, fuel trims, boost levels, sensor activity — to see what’s happening right now while the engine is running.

• Fault code analysis
If the car has stored fault codes, we don’t just read them. We check when they appeared, how often, and what conditions triggered them. A fault code is a clue, not a diagnosis.

• Component testing
We test individual parts: injectors, EGR valves, DPF pressure sensors, turbo control, airflow meters, thermostats, and more. This shows whether a part is responding correctly or failing under load.

• System behaviour under load
We run the vehicle under different conditions — idle, acceleration, cruising — to see how systems behave when stressed. Many faults only appear when the car is actually working hard.

• Mechanical checks
Not everything is electronic. We inspect hoses, wiring, vacuum lines, boost pipes, leaks, blockages, and physical wear that a computer can’t see.

• Root‑cause reporting
Once we’ve gathered the evidence, we explain why the fault is happening — not just what the code says — and outline the most cost‑effective repair path.

Diagnostics = evidence‑based fault finding, not guesswork, not parts‑swapping, and not just “plugging it in”.

If your car isn’t running right, this is how we get to the bottom of it — properly, thoroughly, and with the data to back it up.

🔧 Garage Warranties — The Bit We Print Clearly (But Still Get Threatened About)
At the bottom of every invoice, we spell it out:

“The repairer guarantees all repair work against failure caused by defective materials or workmanship for a period of three months or 3,000 miles, whichever occurs first, provided the vehicle is returned to the repairer or to a third‑party repairer authorised by the repairer. This does not affect your statutory rights.”

And here’s the fun part…
Your statutory rights don’t just protect you — they also give us the right to inspect the vehicle first and put things right before anything gets escalated.

Plus, many of our suppliers offer longer warranties on their parts, so you’re often covered twice over.

So when something goes wrong, you don’t need to march in with the classic:
“I know my rights!”
We already know them — and one of our rights is to fix the issue properly.

Bring the car back.
Let us inspect it.
Let the warranty system do its job.
Teamwork beats threats every time.

Fun Fact Friday!!

Modern cars are basically rolling computers — and they’re packed with sensors.
The average vehicle now has 70–100+ sensors, all quietly working behind the scenes to keep you safe, comfortable and moving.

Here’s what they’re up to:

Engine sensors — monitoring air flow, fuel mix, temperature and timing so the engine doesn’t have a meltdown.

Safety sensors — ABS, traction control, stability control… all the things that stop you from skating across the road like Bambi.

Parking sensors — helping you avoid kissing the neighbour’s bin.

Comfort sensors — climate control, rain sensors, light sensors… because apparently we can’t be trusted to turn our own headlights on anymore.

Exhaust & emissions sensors — keeping your car clean, efficient, and MOT‑friendly.

So next time a warning light pops up, remember:
It’s not your car being dramatic — it’s one of its 100 little watchdogs telling you something needs attention.

🚗 Emissions & the MOT Test: What Your Engine Actually Goes Through
During an MOT, the emissions test isn’t a gentle warm‑up. It’s one of the hardest moments your engine faces all year. The tester has to take the engine through a full‑load acceleration cycle — repeatedly — to measure how cleanly it burns fuel. That means high revs, rapid throttle changes, and the engine working far harder than it does in normal day‑to‑day driving.

If your car is already running a bit rough, misfiring, burning oil, or overdue a service, this sudden stress can expose problems you didn’t know were there. The MOT isn’t causing the issue — it’s simply revealing what the engine has been hiding.

That’s why keeping on top of servicing, oil levels, filters, and general maintenance makes such a difference. A healthy engine handles the emissions test without complaint. A neglected one… doesn’t.

If you’re unsure whether your car is ready for its MOT, we can carry out a pre‑check and advise you honestly and factually. Book online or give us a call.
