When roads turn wet, your tyre tread has an important job to do.

Tread isn't simply something to check because there's a legal minimum. On wet roads, the grooves in your tyres help to clear water from the contact patch, helping the tyre maintain contact with the road.

That becomes particularly important when rain returns after prolonged dry weather, when water can mix with tyre rubber, oils and dust accumulated on the road and temporarily reduce grip.

Check your tread before you travel. The UK legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference, but don't wait until your tyres reach the limit before giving them attention.

And remember, tread is only one part of the picture. Check your tyres using ACT:

🛞 A – Air pressure
🛞 C – Condition
🛞 T – Tread

When the road surface changes, the condition of the tyres connecting you to it matters.

🌧️ When the first rain falls, your tyres have a tougher job to do.

After a long spell of hot, dry weather, tyre rubber, vehicle oils and dust can accumulate on the road. When rain arrives, water mixes with this build-up, temporarily creating a greasy surface and reducing the grip available to your tyres.

And your tyres are your vehicle’s only contact with the road.

Their ability to grip, steer and brake effectively becomes even more important when road conditions change, so make sure they are ready before you travel.

Check your tyres using ACT:

🛞 A – Air pressure
🛞 C – Condition
🛞 T – Tread

Then adjust your driving to the conditions by reducing your speed and leaving more space to stop.

The weather may have changed. Make sure your tyres are ready for it.

Huge congratulations go out to Owen today for passing his driving test on the 1st attempt at Lee on the Solent Driving Test Centre.

Owen only started his lessons with me in June but has progressively advanced in his training after consistent lessons. Without a doubt, he's quick at learning new things.
