Today A just went and passed her driving test with only 2 driving faults.
Itโ€™s a fantastic result but itโ€™s even more so if we know about A that she was extremely nervous.

A couple of years ago I had the "honour" of attending a driver safety course. With nearly 40 years of driving experience, Iโ€™ve seen a lot, but the data on emergency stopping distances really stood outโ€”and I thought this is a vital lesson for the learner drivers I work with every day.
People often think that going slightly over the limit won't make a major difference. But when you combine human reaction time with the physics of braking, the results are eye-opening.

๐Ÿ’ก The Big Takeaway
Even a tiny difference in your speedโ€”sometimes as little as 1 mphโ€”can drastically change the outcome of an emergency situation. The force of an impact increases exponentially with speed, meaning those extra few miles per hour could be the difference between a near-miss and a tragedy.

A question for you all: Based on the table below, why do you think the residual speed is so much higher at those specific distances compared to the small increase in the initial speed? ๐Ÿง

A new learner asked me this exact question the other day. I gave her the breakdown, but I realised a lot of you might be wondering the same thing!

Here is the honest truth behind the numbers:

- ๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐ƒ๐•๐’๐€ ๐ฆ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ข๐ญ: The DVSA looks at an instructor's pass rate based on a rolling 12-month period.

- ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ค: Because my last student fail was back in April 2025, I haven't had a single student fail a test in over 14 months.

Now, while I work incredibly hard to prep everyone for the big day, ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฌ๐งโ€™๐ญ ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐š๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญโ€”๐ข๐ญ ๐›๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ฌ ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ซ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐š๐ฆ๐š๐ณ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ. They are the ones who show up, put in the focus, and smash their tests.

Of course, nobody keeps a perfect record forever, and I know this streak will come to an end eventually. But the longer it lasts, the better! Because it means more and more of my students are getting their ๐‹๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐“๐จ ๐…๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐๐จ๐ฆ (๐‹๐“๐…) at the very first opportunity. ๐ŸŽ‰
