🇧🇲 We are currently in Bermuda, getting Rock’n’Roll ready for the next leg of our Atlantic adventure: the crossing from Bermuda to the Azores.
What a great place this is. Beautiful, colourful, friendly! If you’ve never visited Bermuda, here are a few things that interesting to know:
1. Bermuda isn’t actually one island. It’s around 180 islands and islets all stitched together with bridges.
2. Hamilton, the capital, has only about 1000 residents. Some London apartment blocks have more people than the capital of an entire country.
3. There are no rivers and no freshwater lakes. The islands rely on rainwater collected from their famous white roofs. We have just spent about $450 on drinking water for the boat, which tells you everything you need to know 🫣
4. Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory. Think red post boxes, cricket, afternoon tea... and sunshine.
5. It is also one of the wealthiest places on earth. You notice this fairly quickly.
• Houses are eye-wateringly expensive. Here, property prices are measured in millions rather than thousands. A modest home can cost what a small castle might elsewhere.
• The British Airways flight from London to Bermuda says a lot about the island. Nearly two-thirds of the aircraft is Business and First Class. Bermuda doesn’t really do “budget”.
6. Bermuda is famous for having some of the strictest immigration rules in the world. In many cases, you need to live here for around 20 years before becoming eligible for permanent residency.
Given that Bermuda is also one of the most expensive places on the planet, that raises an interesting question: if you can afford to stay here for 20 years, do you even need permanent residency anymore? 😄
7. Bermuda shorts were invented here and, unlike almost anywhere else in the world, they can still count as business attire.
8. The beaches really do have pink sand. No filter required.
Bermuda may be one of the smallest places on the map, but it has one of the biggest personalities. Beautiful, welcoming and fascinating.
We would absolutely recommend visiting... just make sure your wallet is prepared before you arrive. 😉🌴
