Over the last couple of days I’ve had this VW in for recommissioning.
Brakes have all been checked, and rear brakes adjusted.
Engine and gear box have been serviced.
A little corrosion management on the front.
And a lot of wiring tidying up in the engine bay. There were lose wires, live wires, and messy cables everywhere.
Etc.

Another 150 miles covered today, 2 check points, and 2 passes at Elvington, first pass just gently to get the feel for non prep and to check the AFR at wide open throttle. Second pass I’d planned to absolutely send it! Wheel span off the line, and after shifting into second I’d recommend I was still at maybe 50% throttle 😵‍💫 sorted that and the are woke right up!
Submitted an 8.4 second pass, putting us in 65 place.

So about 250 miles done today in my Moggy! 2 petrol stops (we are also carrying an extra 2 gallons) we didn’t get to make a pass at pod before the rain came in. Left Santa pod about 12, 2 check points done, stopped at a mates in Newark, McDonalds stop, and we are at the glamping pod in York! 😎
Tomorrow we are starting the day at Elvington for a 1/8 mile pass before heading off to 2 more check points 😎

All ready at Santa pod for our first pass of street weekend!

Spent the whole of today working with Gaz RetroMachining on the Mill, while Gaz was on the lathe. We were adapting parts for a customer.
3.2mm cross hole at the bottom of the part, 3.2mm hole meeting it from above, then drilled out to 11.8mm and taped to 1/4 bsp.
The Transwave power adapter earned its keep today! 🤣

Had this Moggy in for a little over a week with instructions from the owner to service it and make it safe to drive and enjoy again.

There’s been a lot done, but here are some of the main jobs carried out:

- Oil and filter change
- New spark plugs
- New fuel pump
- Grease points

I also noticed the carb was sticking. Once stripped down, I found the carb needle was set far too high. Rebuilt and adjusted correctly, it’s now no longer running overly rich or sitting at a high RPM.

One thing that really caught my eye was the battery strap — it was so close to the battery terminals that it’s amazing the car hadn’t caught fire 😳

There was also welding needed on the front chassis.

While inspecting the front brakes, I found the offside wheel was rubbing against the caliper and several bolts were loose. Then came the biggest surprise… the offside wheel bearing had completely collapsed!

I only discovered it through curiosity, as the only real symptom was a slight squeak while driving. Whoever fitted the disc brake conversion had torqued the taper roller bearings like standard Morris Minor wheel bearings, meaning they were far too tight and had failed in less than 20 miles.

Both sides have now been replaced and correctly set up.

The rear brakes were also badly out of adjustment, so they weren’t really doing anything. Those have now been reset properly.

Rear spring hangers were removed and replaced, along with a poly bush kit.

There were plenty of other little jobs along the way that I can’t remember off the top of my head, but the important thing is — it’s now safe! It stops properly, the engine runs happily, and the wheels aren’t about to fall off anymore 😅

I’ve suggested a few future jobs to the owner, but for now it’s ready to be enjoyed 🙂
