***Update regarding the changes the DVSA are making regarding the book of practical driving tests***

As many of you will be aware (unless you live under a rock), there have been issues securing practical driving tests for around 6 years now. Essentially it is a half year wait, once you have a driving test booked. Not to mention having to be logged on by 5.30am on a Monday morning and wait in a queue (like buying concert tickets), in the hope you will get a practical test booked.

The DVSA have started to make changes to the booking system which are about to take effect from May 12th 2026. Essentially, instructors CANNOT HELP IN ANY WAY anymore, it will be completely down to the pupil! There are many issues with this and The NASP (The National Associations Strategic Partnership) are challenging the government, as they believe ‘locking out’ instructors, is actually illegal.

The little flexibility we had (swapping tests with other pupils/instructors) is nearly over. Being able to help pupils navigate the test issues and secure slots/change slots and give advice is part of the job. This is highly frustrating. It has been hard enough over the last few years, constantly worrying when pupils will be ready to take their driving test. Long gone are the days when I hung my keys up at the end of the day and didn't have to think much about work.

I have a letter/kind of press release for all my pupils that I will hand out next week, explaining things further.
