Debunking EV Misconceptions

In the UK, electric cars are not allowed to be completely silent due to regulations aimed at improving pedestrian safety. As of July 2019, all new electric and hybrid vehicles sold in the European Union, including the UK, must be equipped with an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS). This system generates sound when the car is traveling at speeds below 20 km/h (about 12 mph) or when reversing, to alert pedestrians and other road users of the vehicle’s presence.

The sound generated by the AVAS must be continuous and can vary in tone with the vehicle's speed. This regulation was introduced to address safety concerns, particularly for visually impaired pedestrians who rely on the sound of vehicles to navigate safely.

The specifics of the regulation are outlined in the EU Regulation No 540/2014, which the UK follows. The AVAS requirement applies to all new electric and hybrid vehicles, but existing vehicles do not have to be retrofitted with the system unless they undergo significant modifications.
