🚗 DRIVING TIP: MINI-ROUNDABOUTS

⚠️ JUDGING GAPS, NAVIGATING AND EXITING SAFELY

Don’t judge a gap by distance alone!

Mini-roundabouts can be challenging for learner drivers because vehicles can reach your entry point very quickly, even when they appear to be approaching from the far side.

At a normal roundabout, the larger circle may give you more time to assess the movement of other vehicles. At a mini-roundabout, the distances between entry and exit points are much shorter, so careful observation and accurate gap judgement are essential.

✅ 6 STEPS TO APPROACH A MINI-ROUNDABOUT SAFELY

1️⃣ LOOK AHEAD AND IDENTIFY

* Look for the mini-roundabout early.
* Check road signs, markings, pedestrians and cyclists.
* Plan your approach before reaching the roundabout.

2️⃣ CHECK YOUR MIRRORS

* Check your mirrors before changing speed or position.
* Be aware of vehicles following behind you.
* Adjust your approach smoothly and safely.

3️⃣ REDUCE YOUR SPEED

* Approach at a speed that allows you to observe and make a safe decision.
* Be prepared to stop if necessary.
* Never approach so quickly that you cannot give way safely.

4️⃣ CHOOSE THE CORRECT POSITION

* Turning left: Generally approach from the left and keep to the left, unless road markings or the layout indicate otherwise.
* Going straight ahead: Normally keep to the left unless signs, road markings or the road layout indicate otherwise.
* Turning right: Position towards the centre of the road where appropriate, subject to road markings and the layout.

5️⃣ JUDGE THE GAP AND GIVE WAY

* Observe traffic approaching from the right and traffic already on the roundabout.
* Assess the actual speed, direction and distance of approaching vehicles.
* Do not assume a vehicle is far enough away simply because it appears to be approaching from the opposite side.
* Remember that a vehicle can reach your entry point quickly at a mini-roundabout.
* If another vehicle blocks your view, wait until you can see clearly enough to judge the situation safely.
* Enter only when there is a safe gap.

6️⃣ SIGNAL AND EXIT SAFELY

* Signal left when leaving the roundabout, where practicable and helpful to other road users.
* Use the appropriate signal when turning, where it benefits other road users.
* Check your mirrors and remain aware of pedestrians and cyclists.
* Avoid sudden movements or misleading signals, especially where exits are very close together.

💡 KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER

✅ Plan your approach early.

✅ Check your mirrors and observe carefully.

✅ Adjust your speed to the road and traffic conditions.

✅ Give way to traffic from the right unless signs or markings indicate otherwise.

✅ Never judge a gap by distance alone.

✅ If you cannot see clearly or are unsure, wait until it is safe.

✅ Never rush onto a roundabout or force another driver to brake or change direction.

🚘 Remember: Safe driving is about judging the actual gap, speed and movement of traffic—not just how far away a vehicle appears to be.

🚗 DRIVING LESSON: APPROACHING JUNCTIONS — MSPSL ROUTINE

🇬🇧 UK PROFESSIONAL DRIVING INSTRUCTOR

When approaching a junction, using the MSPSL routine helps you plan early, stay in control and deal safely with other road users.

🪞 M — MIRRORS

Check your mirrors early.

* Centre mirror
* Appropriate side mirror
* Look for vehicles, cyclists and other road users behind you.

🚦 S — SIGNAL

Signal clearly and in good time when it will benefit other road users.

Don’t signal automatically if it could confuse someone.

📍 P — POSITION

Choose the correct position for the direction you’re taking.

For example:

* Turning left → normally position appropriately towards the left.
* Turning right → position appropriately towards the centre of the road, where suitable.

🐢 S — SPEED

Reduce your speed so you can approach the junction safely and under full control.

Your speed should allow you to stop if necessary.

👀 L — LOOK

Look carefully in the appropriate direction and assess the situation.

Check for:

* 🚗 Vehicles
* 🚶 Pedestrians
* 🚲 Cyclists
* 🛵 Motorcyclists
* ⚠️ Other hazards

💡 REMEMBER

MSPSL = Mirrors → Signal → Position → Speed → Look

MSPSL isn’t just a checklist you complete once. Keep observing and reassessing as you approach the junction because the situation can change.

❓ TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

You’re approaching a junction to turn left. What is the correct MSPSL routine?

A️⃣ Signal → Speed → Mirrors → Position → Look

B️⃣ Mirrors → Signal → Position → Speed → Look

C️⃣ Mirrors → Position → Signal → Look → Speed

D️⃣ Speed → Mirrors → Signal → Position → Look

✅ Correct answer: B

🚗 THIS WEEK’S DRIVING LESSON: MEETING TRAFFIC ON NARROW ROADS 🇬🇧

Meeting oncoming traffic on a narrow road requires good observation, planning and patience.

When approaching a narrow section:

👀 Look well ahead – Identify approaching vehicles, parked cars and other hazards early.

🪞 Check your mirrors – Be aware of what’s happening around you before changing speed or position.

🐢 Slow down early – Give yourself more time to assess the situation.

↔️ Assess the space – Decide whether there is enough room for both vehicles to pass safely.

🛑 Be prepared to stop – If necessary, stop in a safe position and allow the other vehicle to pass.

🚗 Give way when appropriate – Follow road signs and markings, and consider who has the clearer or safer route.

🚶 Watch vulnerable road users – Take extra care around pedestrians and cyclists.

💡 Remember: Don’t rush. Good drivers look ahead, plan early and communicate clearly with other road users.

❓ TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

You’re approaching a narrow section and an oncoming vehicle is already entering it. What should you do?

A️⃣ Speed up and try to get through first
B️⃣ Sound your horn and continue

🚦 THIS WEEK’S DRIVING LESSON: TRAFFIC LIGHTS

Understanding the traffic-light sequence and knowing how to react correctly is an essential part of safe driving.

🔴 RED LIGHT

🛑 STOP

* You must stop before the stop line.
* Do not enter the junction.
* Wait for the signal to change.

🔴🟠 RED + AMBER TOGETHER

🛑 STILL STOP

* Red and amber together means the red light is still showing.
* You must remain stopped.
* It tells you that the green light is about to show.
* Do not move off until the green light appears.

🟢 GREEN LIGHT

✅ GO — IF IT IS SAFE

* You may proceed if the road ahead is clear.
* Continue to check for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
* Be prepared to stop if the situation changes.

🟠 AMBER LIGHT

🛑 STOP IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO

* If you are before the stop line, you must stop unless you have already crossed it or stopping could cause an accident.
* Don’t accelerate to try to beat the red light.
* Amber follows green and warns that the signal is changing to red.

🟢➡️ GREEN FILTER ARROW

➡️ FOLLOW THE ARROW

* You may proceed in the direction shown by the arrow.
* You must still give way where required.
* Make sure the way is clear before turning.

💡 KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER

✅ Obey all traffic signals.
✅ Red = Stop.
✅ Red + amber = Still stop — green is about to show.
✅ Green = Go if the road is clear and it is safe.
✅ Amber = Stop if you can do so safely.
✅ Always look for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
✅ Never rush through an amber light just to beat the red.

❓ TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

1. You are before the stop line and the amber light comes on. What should you do?

A️⃣ Continue through the junction
B️⃣ Stop before the stop line if it is safe to do so
C️⃣ Speed up to beat the red light
D️⃣ Wait to see if it changes to green

2. You are stopped at a red light and red + amber appear together. What does this mean?

A️⃣ You can go if the road is clear
B️⃣ Remain stopped — the green light is about to show
C️⃣ Slow down and get ready to go
D️⃣ There is a fault with the lights
