Are you ready for your driving test?

As driving instructors we can only advise people about their readiness to take a test!

You may think you are driving well & test ready but are you when the instructor is:

Telling you when to change gear!

Reminding you to go back into 1st gear every time you stop so you can move off again without stalling!

Asking you what the speed limit is!

Talking you through every manoeuvre!

Reminding you to look behind you whilst you’re reversing!

Not planning ahead in good time.

Telling you which lane to be in!

Asking you why you stopped at the roundabout when it was empty or you had ample time to keep going?

Prompting you to not only look right at a roundabout to prevent you taking up both lanes & into the car behind or crashing into the traffic ahead that’s queuing at your exit!

Reminding you which exit to come off at on a roundabout because you forget!

Helping you when you can’t workout if there is enough space for you to get your car through!

Pointing out red lights at junctions & pedestrian crossings!

If all or any of the above apply to you, then you are not test ready!

When the door shuts and it’s just you and the examiner, the car is the loneliest place to be, when you make a mistake and your brain goes to mush it’s the worst feeling ever!

Remember those family and friends who urge you to “just have a go” for the experience, aren’t the ones having to go through it, people have very selective memory’s when it comes to driving and tests!
It’s also not their car that may be damaged.

Ask anyone who has failed a test if it was a nice experience!

Remember it’s YOU doing the test, no one else, no phone to google answers, no help from anyone else just YOU!

If you are up to standard, you will still be nervous, but you won’t be doubtful of your ability!

Go look in the mirror and have a straight talk with yourself!

This is a skill for life.
It saves YOUR life and another road users life.

The big question is.......

Would you take an A level if you hadn’t studied enough and then expect to pass it?

Thanks for reading. Have a serious think .....

Don’t get scammed!

Scammers are increasingly targeting drivers by pretending to be the DVLA.

They’re getting quite clever.

One fake text message.
One fake email.
One rushed click.
That is sometimes all it takes.

Messages about:
⚠️ Vehicle tax refunds
⚠️ Outstanding fines
⚠️ Licence problems
⚠️ Parking penalties
⚠️ Clean Air Zone payments
⚠️ Verification requests
⚠️ Driving test info

They are designed to create panic so you react quickly without thinking.

Some of these fake websites now look incredibly convincing.

That is exactly how people get caught out.

The DVLA has reported that almost 20,000 customers contacted them in 2024 regarding fraudulent activity.

Here are some important things every driver should know.

🛑 The DVLA will NEVER ask for your bank details by text or email.

🛑 Vehicle tax refunds are automatic. They do not arrive through random links.

🛑 Never click links in unexpected texts or emails claiming to be from DVLA.

🛑 Always go directly through GOV.UK yourself instead of following links sent to you.

🛑 Never post photos of your driving licence or V5C online. Those documents contain personal information scammers can use for identity fraud or vehicle cloning.

🛑 Be cautious of websites charging extra fees for simple DVLA services that are cheaper or free through GOV.UK.

Passing your test doesn’t instantly make you confident — it just means the support is gone overnight. One day someone is beside you, the next you’re driving alone with the same level of experience. That person was your safety net, your second pair of eyes, the one who warned you before it was too late!

Driving solo, especially at night, can feel overwhelming. Less visibility and no reassurance can easily turn into anxiety, but that doesn’t mean you’re unsafe — it means you’re adjusting.

Many new drivers worry about doing something wrong, but that often comes from being careful and responsible, not incapable.

Using “P” plates is completely fine if it helps you feel calmer. Other road users are usually far more forgiving and patient towards them than “L” plates for some reason.

Confidence comes quietly through familiar routes, safe journeys, and repeated experience.

You’re not failing — you’re learning independence. The confidence will come.

Expectations for learners & their instructor.

Learning to drive is a responsibility, not something you simply turn up for.

Arriving late, distracted, tired, or unprepared means lost learning time and slower progress. Every minute of your lesson counts.

🚗 Be on time – it shows respect for both your instructor and your own progress.

🧠 Come switched on – if your mind is not focused, your driving will not be either.

📈 Progress comes from effort – the learners who improve most are the ones who reflect on previous lessons, remember their faults, and return ready to work on them.

📝 Consistency matters – inconsistent effort creates inconsistent drivers, and that can become unsafe later on.

⏱ Your instructor arrives with a plan, clear goals, and safety in mind. Turning up unprepared wastes valuable lesson time.

⚠️ The driving test is only the beginning. Driving alone afterwards is the real challenge.

DVSA ANNOUNCE THE USE OF ROBOTIC AI EXAMINERS TO REDUCE TEST WAITING TIMES

In a move to tackle long driving test delays, the DVSA have announced the trial of AI-powered in-car examiners, set to begin later this year.

The system will be installed inside test vehicles and will assess candidates in real time using advanced sensors and behavioural analysis.

👀 Key Features Include:
• Eye Tracking Technology – monitors mirror checks, hazard awareness, and focus
• Decision Analysis – detects hesitation, late reactions, and “guess-based” decisions
• Confidence Scoring – evaluates how controlled and assured the driver is throughout
• Instant Fault Detection – automatically logs driver, serious, and dangerous faults
• Real-Time Feedback – provides a full breakdown immediately after the test

The DVSA have stated the aim is to:
👉 Increase test availability
👉 Remove examiner bias
👉 Create more consistent results nationwide

📍 Pilot Scheme
The AI examiners will be trialled in selected UK test centres from September 2026, with a full national rollout planned for early 2027 if successful.

Early reports suggest the system is particularly effective at identifying:
• “Last-minute mirror checks”
• Over-reliance on instructor prompts
• Drivers who appear confident but lack awareness
