Well done Emma! An excellent first time pass in Gala this afternoon with the examiner commenting on a nice drive 🎉🙌

A brilliant result too for the Eardley family as Emma is the 2nd to pass their test first time, after her brother Jacob passed at the start of the year.

You handled your nerves very well and came out with a well deserved pass! Thanks to Mum as well for all the extra practice too 😁

To all the patient drivers out there—thank you.

You know who you are. You're the ones who leave plenty of space behind a learner driver, wait patiently on hill starts, don't blast on the horn when they stall, and give a reassuring wave to let them know everything is okay.

You might not realise it, but those small acts of patience and kindness make a huge difference. They help build confidence and create a safer, less stressful environment for people learning to drive.

From driving instructors, parents, and everyone supervising learner drivers—thank you. We really appreciate you.

To those who tailgate learners for driving at the speed limit and overtake dangerously, sit too close on hills, or sound the horn the moment something goes wrong, from the bottom of my heart, I hope you always find bird p**p on your car after every wash.

A little patience and understanding go a long way.

Be the reason a learner gains confidence, not the reason they lose it.

Always been a top pupil with a brilliant attitude, everything was always chill and no stress. Except on test day, but thats understandable 😅

Ive been pretty quiet on the test front lately, but I am very please to say well done to Kayley passing her test first time in Peebles yesterday! 🙌

Been an excellent pupil throughout and always took on-board new things and (somewhat) willing to give everything a go 😂

She sat her test in her own car as its what she felt most comfortable in, and I'm really happy it went well!

Credit to her partner Alex who helped out with a lot of extra practice 💪

Don’t Drive Blind.

My biggest pet peeve on the roads is seeing people on their phones while driving. Yet, they don't realise how far you can travel after just 1 second.

At 30 mph, your vehicle travels about 13 meters every second.

That means a quick glance at your phone can take you:

1 second: 13 meters — about 3 car lengths
2 seconds: 27 meters — about 6 car lengths
3 seconds: 40 meters — about 9 car lengths
5 seconds: 67 meters — about 15 car lengths
10 seconds: 134 meters — about 30 car lengths

A text, notification, or “just one quick look” can cover more distance than you think—without your eyes on the road.

Eyes on the road. Hands on the wheel. Stay safe.
A few seconds of distraction can change everything.

I thought I’d answer a few questions I get asked regularly!

Are you the real Sam Smith? 🎤

I am real… but I don’t sing! 🙅‍♂️

Why are you called SAS Driving School?

SAS are my initials — my full name is Sam Alexander Smith. Just be glad my parents didn’t follow through with calling me Alexander Sam Smith… that would have made for some very suspicious initials! 😅

How long have you been an instructor? ⏱️

I qualified in July 2022 and taught on a trainee licence for six months before that, so I’ve been teaching for around four and a half years now.

What made you want to become an instructor? 🚘

I’ve always had a passion for cars and driving. Ever since I was young, I knew all about different cars and their specs! The moment I passed my driving test, I wanted to be behind the wheel all the time.

A few years later, while looking for a new job, I knew I wanted to do something related to driving. I came across an advert to become an instructor and thought, “Why not give that a go?” With the support of my amazing wife, Ashley, I completed all my training while still working a full-time job. 💪

What’s your favourite lesson to teach? 😊

I love teaching every part of driving and watching learners grow in confidence, but my favourite has to be the very first lesson with someone who has never driven before.

Seeing their face light up when they move off for the first time is brilliant! ✨

Can I use your car for my test tomorrow? 📝

This is something instructors get asked nearly every day, and the answer will always be the same: no.

As a responsible driving instructor, I only let pupils use my car for their test when I know they’re ready and trust that they’ll bring it back in one piece! 😄

Can you show me the test route? 🗺️

Again, the answer is no. There is more than one test route, and examiners can use almost any suitable road — so there isn’t one single route to memorise.

Learn to drive safely and confidently, and you’ll be able to drive anywhere. You won’t need to memorise test routes! 🚦
