🔔 Three small MOT items that are easy to overlook

An MOT checks prescribed safety and environmental items on the day of the test. That includes some simple pieces of equipment you may not think about:

🔊 The horn must be fitted, working and loud enough to be properly audible. Inappropriate musical or air horns on a car or light van can cause an issue.

🚗 The speedometer must be fitted and working, where required for the class of vehicle.

🪞 Mirrors must be secure, in good condition and provide a proper view of the road and traffic behind. Cracked, missing or taped-on mirrors may be picked up during the test.

Before your MOT, test the horn and check that the mirrors are secure and giving a clear view. It is better to find a problem beforehand than discover it on the day: the tester cannot help a vehicle pass if it does not meet the requirements.

Remember, an MOT is an assessment of required safety and environmental items on the test day. It is not a full mechanical inspection and is not a guarantee of future reliability. Advisories are worth acting on, even if they do not mean an immediate MOT failure.

Tyre safety is about more than checking the tread depth. 🚗

Before autumn journeys around Whaley Bridge, New Mills, Buxton, Marple and the wider High Peak and Stockport areas, take a few minutes to check:

✅ Sidewalls: look for cuts, bulges, cracks or anything embedded in the rubber.

✅ Wear patterns: wear on one edge, in the centre or in patches can point to an underlying issue: not just a worn tyre.

✅ Cold pressures: check all fitted tyres when cold, using the pressures in your handbook or on the vehicle’s information label. A tyre can look fine while being incorrectly inflated.

✅ Spare and repair equipment: check the spare tyre separately, including its pressure and condition. If your car uses a puncture repair kit, make sure the sealant is in date and the compressor works. These aren’t covered by the standard MOT check.

The legal minimum tread depth for most cars is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the whole circumference: but tyres can still need attention before reaching that limit.

An MOT assesses the fitted tyres and other testable items on the day of the test. It is not a full mechanical inspection, does not certify every tyre issue or guarantee safe future travel.

An MOT is a test-day assessment of specified safety and environmental items. It is not a full mechanical inspection or a guarantee of overall vehicle reliability. A service is planned maintenance, with checks and replacement of service items intended to help maintain your vehicle between MOTs.

If you only need an MOT, we’ll keep the conversation focused on the test. If maintenance is also due, we’ll explain why it may be worth considering and provide an upfront quote before any additional work begins. We’ll also photograph relevant findings on the ramp so you can see what we see, no confusing jargon and no pressure to approve work you don’t understand.

An MOT and a service are not the same thing: knowing the difference helps you look after your car properly and keep you moving.

An MOT is a test-day assessment of specified safety and environmental items. It is not a full mechanical inspection or a guarantee that your vehicle will remain safe or reliable for the rest of the year.

A service is planned maintenance. It can include scheduled oil and filter changes, spark-plug renewal, air and cabin-filter replacement, fluid checks and other manufacturer-recommended items. Things an MOT does not assess as part of its test.

In plain English: an MOT checks whether the vehicle meets the required standard on the day. A service helps maintain its condition over time.

Heading off on a long journey? Don’t assume the spare wheel in the boot has been checked during your MOT. 🚗

A standard MOT generally assesses the tyres fitted to the vehicle at the time of the test, including their condition, security and legal requirements.

A spare wheel, space-saver or puncture repair kit carried in the boot is not normally part of the standard MOT assessment. If a spare wheel is fitted to the vehicle as a road wheel, that fitted tyre can be assessed during the test.

Before relying on your emergency equipment, it’s sensible to check separately:

✅ Spare wheel or space-saver condition and pressure
✅ Puncture repair sealant expiry date
✅ Compressor operation and cable
✅ Jack and wheel brace
✅ Locking wheel-nut key
✅ Space-saver speed and distance limits

Taking a SORN vehicle back on the road?

If your car has been off the road for a while, get the MOT appointment arranged before you plan that first proper journey.

WBARC offers DVSA-approved Class 4 MOTs from £54.85 for cars, light vans, hybrids and EVs. We will explain the result clearly and show relevant findings with ramp photographs. If further work is needed, you will receive a quote before anything is authorised.

A vehicle without a current MOT can only be driven on the road to a pre-booked MOT or repair appointment, where the vehicle is otherwise properly insured and safe to drive. It is not a licence to use the car normally before the test.

An MOT assesses specified safety and environmental requirements on the test day. It is not a full inspection for a vehicle returning from storage, and a pass cannot guarantee future reliability. If you want the vehicle checked more thoroughly before regular use, ask us about a separate inspection.

Is your car coming out of SORN? Check the MOT before you drive it.

A vehicle declared SORN does not need an MOT while it is kept off the public road. But that changes as soon as you plan to use it again.

Before driving a previously stored vehicle on the road:

• Check its MOT status
• Book the MOT before moving it
• Make sure it is insured for the journey
• Check that it is safe to travel
• Arrange the correct tax before using it on the road

You can drive to a pre-booked MOT appointment without a current MOT, but only for that appointment. A SORN vehicle should not be used for shopping, commuting or other journeys first.

Remember, an MOT checks specific safety and environmental requirements on the day of the test. It is not a full inspection of a vehicle that has been standing for a long time, so ask for a separate check if you have concerns about its condition.
