This one is definitely worth a post. Those Germans are a clever lot. Today I had a 2021 BMW R1250RT in for a full service and for the first time came across their ‘shift cam’ technology. Where the inlet cams actually have 2 completely different shaped lobes for each cylinder. The inlet camshafts slide across in their journals after an electronic actuator ejects a pin into a guide/track when the engine reaches a certain RPM, then a larger/taller lobe acts upon the valves causing it to open further and for a longer period, when the RPM drops again, a second pin is actuated into a second guide/track and the camshaft slides back again, utilising the smaller/shorter lobe. The reason for this technology is all to improve fuel efficiency!
