In 5 days time I celebrate to the day 25 years of service in the Caravan and Motorhome Industry
I have met some really lovely people, fantastic customers and I’ve learnt so much along the way.
My Career started at Willerby Holiday Homes when I was l18 years old.
I had an apprenticeship and was training to be a Graphic Designer, I had 6 months left to go and me being me, managed to get all of my course work completed and handed in early. I wasn’t enjoying the workplace or the environment, nor was I enjoying the rat race or the tedious tasks of being an apprentice. One thing lead to another and I walked away…. My parent where fuming with me at the time 🙊 (they are OK now 😀)
The day I walked out of my workplace I walked 6 miles to Willbery Hoilday Homes. I knocked on the door of the reception and they let me in….
I was hand forced into an office and I given a job there and then.
However, this wasn’t a pleasant interview. It was a really aggressive one and I was scared…
I was told by Michael Carr the chief tech (a tall 50 year old, grey haired, crew cut spiked hair man with a wonky eye and a long blue technicians over coat and the scariest voice I’ve ever heard, a bit like Liam Neesons voice but with a board Hull Acsent) that if I let them down, “I wouldn’t be able to sit down for 6 weeks and nor would anyone recognise me for 4 weeks”. This scary moment was on a Friday afternoon, (when caravan manufacturers actually worked on a Friday 😂)
I started on the Monday at 7am. 7 miles on my push bike to get there and 7 miles on my push bike to get back.
I loved it…. I was in my element, the lads I worked with became my best friends, we had each others back, we looked after each other and we worked together and picked up slack for each other if we was feeling rough from a crazy night out.
I have worked and learnt a-lot from some truly awesome people and miss them every-time I think about them. I am forever thankful to them for the knowledge, the skill and the discipline they have invested into me.
Whilst at Willerby, I learnt the full construction and assembly of a Static Caravan. Little did I know at the time, Touring Caravans and Motorhome’s are built using the same process and in the same way.
We moved to Nottinghamshire and worked for a few dealers. I did the touring caravan and motorhome training and I got the qualifications needed to become a fully qualified Caravan and Motorhome Engineer.
Later down the line, I did the calculations, my daughter was born and I needed to be flexible as my wife also worked.
So. I set up Direct Leisure Repairs 18 years ago and haven’t looked back.
I am forever great full to my Customers (old and new), my family for supporting me and my Wife for believing in me.
I will forever be in your hands doing everything I can to help and bringing you the best possible service that I can offer.
Hopefully I’ll get another 25 years doing what I love.
