Driving in Autumn: Dark Nights, Wet Roads and the Return of the Pothole

We promised to share our top tips on keeping yourself safer as the nights get longer and statistically more accidents happen.

Top Tip #7
Low autumn sunshine: Nature’s very own full-beam headlights

We’ve talked about darkness, rain and fog. But what about those beautiful, bright autumn mornings?

Lovely for a walk. Less lovely when the sun is sitting directly in front of you as you approach a junction.

Low sunshine can dazzle drivers, making it difficult to see traffic lights, road markings, pedestrians and vehicles ahead. Wet roads and windscreens can make the glare even worse.

And no, squinting harder doesn’t count as a driving technique.

Trident Top Tip: Don’t let sunshine catch you out.

* Keep your windscreen clean inside and out.
* Check that your wipers are working properly.
* Keep sunglasses handy for bright conditions.
* Use your sun visor.
* Reduce your speed if glare affects your vision, and be prepared to stop if you cannot see safely.

Bright sunshine doesn’t automatically mean good driving conditions. Sometimes the biggest hazard is the one shining straight into your eyes.

Your experience of a road is useful. Assuming it will always behave the same way is not.

We still one more of our Trident Top Tips to help you stay safer.

Driving in Autumn: Dark Nights, Wet Roads and the Return of the Pothole

The clocks have gone back. The weather can’t make up its mind. And suddenly, every journey seems to involve either dazzling sunshine or driving in what feels like the middle of the night. Welcome to autumn driving!

If you’ve recently found yourself leaving home in the dark and coming back in the dark, you’re not imagining things. Autumn changes how we see the road, how much grip our tyres have and how quickly we can react to hazards.

And there’s a reason to take it seriously.

According to the AA’s Accident Assist data, crashes recorded by its service increased by an average of 11% in the three weeks after the autumn clock change compared with the three weeks before, based on data from 2022 to 2024.

So, before you blame everything on the weather, we take a look at seven Autumn driving hazards and what you can do about them.

1. Dark mornings, darker evenings and the mysterious disappearance of daylight

šŸ‚Wet roads, slippery leaves and the pothole lottery

šŸŒ§ļøRain, spray, mist and fog: Can you actually see where you’re going?

🚓🚶Pedestrians and cyclists: Spot them before they spot you

šŸ¤” Familiar roads, unfamiliar conditions

ā±ļøBusy commutes, tired brains and the temptation to rush
šŸ”† Low autumn sunshine: Nature’s very own full-beam headlights

Logan - your mantra was ā€œI got this!ā€ and you absolutely did. It’s fair to say there were a few wobbles in the hour before, that is totally normal for all students when they feel nervous. But you didn’t let it get to you and with the help of a simple breathing exercise you passed your driving test. No more waiting for lifts after work !!! Well done for the brilliant drive today and all the hard work you put in in the weeks and months leading up to the test. Thank you for choosing Pennie Hughes @ Trident Driver Training to help you with your training.

šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰Congratulations to Ivy. She not only passed her driving test, which is a fantastic enough achievement, she passed her practical driving test with ZERO faults. A great and rare achievement! Her instructor, Mark, says he hopes she will wave to him when they see each other on the road now she can drive independently and has her own car. A great result that Ivy worked hard for and totally deserved. Her examiner said it was one of the best drives she had ever experienced! Well done from Mark and the team at Trident Driver Training

Enjoy your independence and thank you for choosing Steve and Trident Driver Training to help you with your training.

If you feel like you are taking longer than the national average, it usually comes down to practical everyday factors, not your ability behind the wheel.

The last of 4 Real Reasons that affect how long it takes you to learn to drive.

3. Confidence and Anxiety Levels

Driving a heavy piece of metal surrounded by traffic is genuinely stressful.

We are seeing more students than ever managing driving anxiety, and very low confidence levels in general. Trying to rush through that fear and constantly comparing yourself to more confident people, only causes mistakes and ultimately has the opposite effect of making you less confident and more anxious. Taking a gradual, step-by-step approach to build real confidence is a strength, not a weakness. You will be a much safer driver as a result.

The third of 4 Real Reasons that affect how long it takes you to learn to drive.

3. The Quality of Private Practice

Private practice with parents or family is great—unless you spend two hours driving around reinforcing bad habits or getting into a screaming match. To make extra practice actually work for you, set specific goals with your instructor so your accompanying driver knows exactly what skills you are supposed to be working on.
At Trident Driver Training we use progress books and charts so that you have a clear idea what to practice. We encourage accompanying drivers to sit in on lessons so they can see what you need to practice.

Practice areas are also key to your progress. Any practice is useful practice but if you always drive the same roads and never stretch your skills to the areas you need to develop you are going to take longer to learn.

If you feel like you are taking longer than the ā€œnational averageā€, it usually comes down to practical everyday factors, not necessarily your ability behind the wheel.

The second of 4 Real Reasons that affect how long it takes you to learn to drive.

2. Your Personal Learning Style

Learning to drive requires two completely different skill sets: the mental theory and the physical coordination. Everyone balances these differently. You might find steering and car control a breeze but struggle to get your head around test theory. Or, you might pass your theory test with a perfect score but need way more repetition to build up your physical confidence. Both paths are 100% normal so don’t compare yourself to others - they have their own difficulties but they may not tell you about them.

Others may already have learned skills that are relevant for driving like riding a bike, tractor, moped. Even things like playing musical instruments will affect how you learn to drive. Drummers usually learn quickly because they are used to doing different things with each arm/leg and can co-ordinate pedals and steering easily.

Your age will affect your learning style. Unfortunately that’s a fact of life. Those younger students who are already in a learning environment will be more tuned into soaking up new information. That’s Science not skill.

If you feel like you are taking longer than the national average, it usually comes down to practical everyday factors, not your ability behind the wheel.

The first of 4 Real Reasons that affect how long it takes you to learn to drive.

1. Where You Live (The Commute Factor)

Geography is a massive variable. If you live right in the middle of Exeter, you have minimal travel time and can start practicing city centre routes / dual carriageways / large roundabouts and test areas from an early stage (whether you like it or not)

But if you live in Exmouth, it takes a minimum of 15/20 minutes just to drive out to the high-speed roads and complex junctions, and another 15/20 minutes to get back. That is 30/40 minutes of your lesson spent just commuting to the training ground.

Learning in a quiet, simple environment requires fewer hours than navigating complex, heavy-traffic, or highly congested areas. So students who learn in Cornwall will learn a lot quicker than students in Exeter.

That isn’t a reflection of your driving skills; it’s just a map issue!
