Potholes, corrosion and flat batteries are just a few culprits.

Whether it's relentless rain or elusive freezing and snow, potholed, wet roads chew up tyres and suspension; road salt can cause havoc, and then there's a battery that's been quietly dying since summer and finally gives up on the coldest morning of the year.

The most expensive car problems are the ones you ignore.

A vehicle health check for your Mercedes, BMW, or Mini picks up all of this and, better still, getting it done early is far cheaper than sorting out a problem when it's an emergency.

What happens when brake pads are left for far too long…

This car came in with a warning light on, and this is what we found:

There was barely anything left of the brake pads, and the brake discs were heavily corroded.

There would have been loud scraping sounds every time the brakes were applied, well before the warning light came on.

And this is the important bit from a driver’s point of view.

Brake pads don't get to this state overnight. They wear gradually, which is why regular checks can help catch the problem before it gets this far.

Brake pads have a shelf life. If they’re worn and left too long, braking performance can be compromised, and what would normally be a relatively straightforward maintenance job can turn into a much bigger repair, because other parts of the braking system can be damaged too.

We’re so glad it was us here at MBS Exeter who found this issue rather than the owner discovering there was a problem at a time when they really needed their brakes.

If your brakes have started making a noise, don't wait for a warning light to get them checked.

A problem you probably wouldn’t have a clue about until you really need to get that wheel off…

We had to do a video on this because we're coming across it far too often here at MBS Exeter: Wheel nuts that have been seriously over-tightened.

And you're most likely oblivious to it.

In this case, even our workshop equipment was struggling.

If you're at the side of the road with a puncture and only have the tools supplied with your car, you've potentially got a much bigger problem.

Over-tightening can also damage wheel bolts, locking wheel nuts, and even the wheel itself. Something that should be relatively straightforward can then become a drawn-out and costly job.

Wheel bolts need to be tightened to the manufacturer's correct specification, not simply as tight as they'll go.

So next time you're having tyres fitted, it's worth making sure they're tightened correctly.

It's a small thing, but as George shows here, it can save a lot of hassle later.

So what are you actually paying for when your BMW needs diagnostics?

Many people think ‘diagnostics’ on their car is simply a case of plugging a computer into the car and waiting for it to tell us what's wrong.

If only it were that simple.

So we thought we’d clear up any confusion!
The diagnostic equipment gives us information — fault codes and data that help point us in the right direction.
But a fault code isn't necessarily a diagnosis.

The next part is working out why that fault has appeared. That can mean checking, testing and ruling things out until the actual cause of the problem is found.

The truth is that replacing a part based on a fault code alone doesn't necessarily fix the problem.

So yes, plugging a computer in is one part of BMW diagnostics, but finding out what’s actually causing the fault is where the real diagnostic work happens.

Get the boring car stuff out of the way, so you can enjoy the good stuff.

Booking your car in for a service probably isn't going to be the highlight of your week.
But once it's done, it's done.

And when you're heading off for a weekend away, a day on the coast or just getting on with everyday life, that's exactly how you want it to feel, one less thing sitting at the back of your mind.

Keeping on top of regular servicing might not be the exciting part of owning a car. Getting in it and enjoying where it takes you, most definitely is!

Most of us judge whether something’s wrong with our car by how it feels to drive.

There may not be anything obvious like pulling to one side, the steering might feel fine and you’re happy driving it as you go about your day.

But your tyres might be telling a different story.

If your wheel alignment is out, your tyres can start wearing unevenly, and to begin with, you might not notice anything different as you drive.

That could mean having to replace your tyres sooner than you need to, simply because they haven’t been wearing evenly.

So you don’t necessarily need to wait until the car feels different to think about your wheel alignment.

Have you hit a nasty pothole (and there are plenty around here!) or a kerb? That can be a good reason to have the alignment checked.

Having new tyres fitted? Checking the alignment can help give them the best chance of wearing evenly from the start.

And then there are the more obvious signs that something may not be right, unusual or uneven tyre wear, the steering feeling different or the car pulling to one side.
These don’t automatically mean your wheel alignment is the cause, but they’re good reasons to get things checked.

What makes an older car worth keeping?

This mid-90s Mercedes SL320 was recently in our workshop for a fair bit of work.

And with a car of this age, there comes a point where you could look at what needs doing, compare it with the car’s financial value and question whether it makes sense.

But that’s not always how people feel about their cars.

Sometimes you know its history. You know how it drives. You’ve owned it for years. Or quite simply, you really enjoy owning it and you’d rather look after the car you have than replace it with something newer.

We work on Mercedes-Benz, BMW and MINI models across the generations at MBS Exeter.

New or old, if a car matters to its owner, we totally get why looking after it matters too.

One issue you don't want to be dealing with during these heatwaves...

We're talking coolant leaks...

For anyone wondering why heat makes this worse:

The coolant in your car has to work harder in extreme heat to absorb and move engine heat. With a leak, heavy traffic or a worn part, it can boil over, evaporate faster, or stop protecting the engine properly; that's when you risk your car overheating.

Luckily, we caught this one early. A bit of investigation with a pressure tester and it was sorted.

➡None of us want to be that car on the hard shoulder, kids and dog in the back, melting in this heat.
