🐾 As a dog-friendly workplace, we couldn't let 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘆 pass without recognising some of our favourite four-legged colleagues!

This week, our office pups enjoyed some well-deserved treats, including "puppachinos" specially prepared with dog-friendly whipped cream, topped with peanut butter and a tasty dog treat.

We were also treated to a showcase of impressive tricks and plenty of wagging tails, reminding us of the joy, companionship and positivity that dogs bring to our lives, both at home and in the workplace.

A huge thank you to everyone who brought their canine companions along and shared their photos with us. It was wonderful to see so many happy faces, human and canine alike!

From Aberdeen to Shetland, Orkney and back to mainland Scotland, the Terberg RT Electric recently completed a demonstration across NorthLink Ferries operations, showcasing how zero-emission technology can support the demanding requirements of daily port logistics.

Terberg Special Vehicles partnership with NorthLink Ferries, operated by Serco, spans many years. Today, a fleet of around 20 Terberg specialist tractors supports daily ferry and port handling operations across the Northern Isles, helping keep essential freight moving between mainland Scotland and the island communities that rely on these vital transport links.

Building on the proven success of Terberg's diesel fleet, the RT Electric demonstration gave operators the opportunity to experience electric performance in real working conditions.

As many of you know, Flying is not my greatest pass time but as I flew across Europe last week it got me thinking about what is happening in various sectors. I have to have trust in who is maintaining this plane and hope that everything is aligned in respect to safety and compliance.

Over the past 25 years, I’ve seen many companies change their direction, focus and the range of services they keep in-house. Outsourcing has become the norm across many sectors, but what is often overlooked is that responsibility doesn’t transfer with it. As the contracting company, you remain fully accountable for how your contractors operate on your behalf.

More recently, particularly within the aviation sector, I’ve noticed a rise in smaller start-ups providing specialist GSE maintenance services. It’s genuinely encouraging to see that entrepreneurial spirit – it’s something I experienced myself nearly three decades ago. However, the landscape has changed significantly, especially here in the UK.

If you are engaging contractors, even on an occasional basis, have you carried out the right level of due diligence? The responsibility sits firmly with you to ensure they are a suitable business partner and capable of protecting your assets, your people, and your reputation.

This goes beyond simply trusting experience or taking cost at face value. You should be confident that they are appropriately insured for the work they are undertaking, properly qualified – not just experienced – and operating with robust health and safety policies and safe systems of work. It is equally important to understand their financial stability and to be assured that any equipment they use is properly maintained, tested and safe.

These are not optional checks; they are part of your obligations when you appoint an external contractor.

Things do go wrong – that’s a reality of any industry. But many failures are avoidable with the right level of diligence. Support start-ups, encourage growth, and share knowledge where you can, but always place safety and compliance first. It protects your business just as much as it protects theirs.

Too often I see enthusiasm outweigh responsibility. If something appears to be the cheapest option, it’s always worth asking why.
