Since November 2020 Paint Barn has been gradually improving Unit 6 Swift’s Farm to make it habitable for our use. The workshop had been neglected for many years and was dark and dingy, left contaminated with oil and cutting fluids, basically a filthy place. We needed it deep cleaning and refreshing with a floor clean enough area to start building on so we could perform all of the necessary preparation and paint tasks that are part of a quality restoration.
The first task was tidying the mess the tenants left behind before anything could happen.
The second job was to remove some of the extremely large and heavy metalwork tools that I purchased (for my other company actually based next door Paul Baker Custom Metalwork Ltd) from the clearance company and begin the more thorough clean up process.
After this we removed any old pipe work, made cables safe, removed a wall that was a bit unstable and prepped and painted the walls and foam roof insulation.
Next task was to shot blast the floors to remove the contaminated layer before a specialist floor company came in and repaired the cracked concrete and laid an epoxy floor.
After this we could begin planning the layout and test vehicle movements inside the workshop. As usual the initial plan was modified as we went along. The worst thing about the workshop (and next door) is that the floors are not level as they used to be cattle pens, the floors have runs on them which makes any installation work take 3 times as long. 🤯
After lots of days of decision making it was finally put into action. Then came the hours, days, weeks and long weekends of work to achieve a useable work area, it’s STILL a work in progress but it’s now useable and a huge improvement on the old workshop.
It’s secure, alarmed, has CCTV and is dry (almost) so anything else can follow.
Work still includes another vehicle lift to be installed, the paint mixing room and office to finish, dust curtains to be fitted, heating to be connected before the cold gets here (soon I think), assemble racking…………. the list is long!
