It's Wet Belt Wednesday here at Autoworks, so let's talk about the belt you can't see but should neverrrr ignore.
If your car has a wet timing belt, there’s a good chance you’ve never even thought about it.
And honestly… that’s exactly how it likes it. 👀
Unlike a traditional cambelt, a wet belt runs inside the engine, in oil. Sounds clever, doesn't it?
Well… yeah. Until it isn’t. 😬
Here are a few things every wet-belt owner should know:
🛢️ THE OIL MATTERS!
A wet belt is designed to run in a specific engine oil. Using the wrong oil can contribute to belt deterioration.
Basically, your wet belt is a bit fussy.
It doesn't want whatever was on offer at the BP garage.😂
🔧 DON'T FORGET THE OIL CHANGES
Regular oil and filter changes are important for any engine, but even more so when your timing belt is swimming around in it.
Fresh oil = happy engine.
Neglected oil = your engine quietly plotting revenge. 😬
👀 KEEP AN EYE ON THE BELT
As a wet belt deteriorates, it can start to break down and shed material into the oil.
That material can potentially cause restrictions in the oil system — and suddenly a relatively straightforward maintenance job can become a VERY expensive engine problem.
And nobody likes an engine bill popping up out of the blue 💸
📖 KNOW WHEN YOUR BELT IS DUE
Wet-belt replacement intervals vary depending on the car's engine, model, age and mileage.
So don't rely on your mate Div down the pub saying:
"Ah, it'll be alright mate. I've never changed mine."
That's not exactly a service schedule and some folk are just lucky. Your best bet is ALWAYS getting your service done on time and being vigilant - which brings me onto the nagging section😂
🚨 DON'T IGNORE THE WARNING SIGNS
Oil pressure warnings, unusual engine noises, poor running or debris/material showing up in the oil or filter shouldn't be ignored.
If your engine is trying to tell you something… it's probably worth listening. 👂
🔍 BUYING A USED CAR?
If it's fitted with a wet belt, ask:
✅ When was it last serviced?
✅ Was the correct oil used?
✅ Has the belt ever been inspected/replaced?
✅ Is there proof of the work?
Because "Yeah, it's been looked after" isn't quite the same as a service history. ALWAYS ask for paperwork or check the oil grade etc in the service book.
💡 THE GOLDEN RULE:
Don't wait for the wet belt to fail before you start thinking about it.
Preventative maintenance is ALWAYS better than turning up with an engine that has decided retirement sounds nice. 🫠
