Five things that give me the ick as a driving instructor 👀🚗

Tailgating learners. Beeping when they stall. Not indicating and expecting everyone to read your mind…

But number five really bothers me: making someone feel stupid for asking a question.

Learning to drive can feel overwhelming without worrying that you’ll be judged for not knowing something. Ask the question. Ask it again if you need to. That’s what driving lessons are for 💛

And passing first time? Lovely—but how you drive afterwards matters far more.

Can you fail your driving test for getting the “show me, tell me” questions wrong? 🚗

Getting one—or both—wrong means ONE driving fault, often called a minor. That alone won’t fail your test 💛

But during the “show me” question, you’re still driving. If your driving becomes serious or dangerous while using a control, that CAN lead to a fail. Keep your attention on the road and demonstrate it when it’s safe.

Taking your driving test in your own car? Check these TWO things with your insurer 🚗👇

1️⃣ Does your policy cover YOU taking your practical driving test in that car?

Your existing learner insurance may already include it, but check your policy or ask your insurer directly.

2️⃣ What happens to your insurance when you pass?

Some learner policies end the moment you pass. Before you drive home, you need cover that allows you to drive as a full licence holder.

And if someone else is driving your car home, check they’re insured to drive it too ✅

Get this sorted before test day so you can concentrate on your driving 💛

Someone flashing their headlights does not mean it’s safe for you to go.

The Highway Code says flashing headlights should only be used to make another road user aware of your presence. You should never assume a flash is an invitation to proceed.

In real life, drivers often flash to let someone out—but they can only control their own vehicle.

Before moving, make your own observations and check for:

* A cyclist travelling alongside the vehicle
* Traffic approaching in another lane
* A pedestrian crossing the road
* Anything hidden by the flashing vehicle

If you can confirm it’s safe, move carefully and continue looking. If you can’t, wait—even if the other driver becomes impatient.

Remember: a flash is information, not permission.

Your driving test doesn’t have to be perfect. What matters is showing you can drive safely, make your own decisions and keep your focus if something doesn’t go to plan.

Sophie passed her driving test last week, and I couldn’t be prouder of her. She has autism, ADHD and dyslexia—and I hope her story gives other learners a little encouragement.

Every learner is different. There isn’t one way that works for everyone, so I get to know what helps each pupil feel comfortable, understand instructions and build confidence.

The goal is safe driving. We can adapt how we practise and explain things along the way.

Your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Keep finding what helps you learn. 🚗💛
