NEW DRIVERS
POINTS, REVOCATION AND BANS EXPLAINED SIMPLY
If you are a new driver in the UK, the rules on penalty points are stricter than most people realise.
This is straight from the GOV.UK guidance.
πΉ First 2 years after passing
If you get 6 or more penalty points within 2 years of passing your first driving test, your licence is revoked.
Revoked does not mean banned.
It means your licence is taken away.
πΉ What revocation actually means
β’ You go back to a provisional licence
β’ You must reapply and pay again
β’ You must retake and pass
β Theory test
β Practical driving test
Until you pass again, you cannot drive unsupervised.
πΉ Points before you passed
If you picked up penalty points on a provisional licence, they carry over when you pass your test.
If further points then take you to 6 or more within 2 years, your licence will still be revoked.
πΉ Revoked vs banned
β’ Revoked
β Automatic process
β Triggered at 6 points
β Retake tests required
β’ Banned
β Ordered by a court
β You cannot drive at all for a set period
β Retests may also be required depending on the ban
πΉ Why the rules are tougher
New drivers are statistically at the highest risk of serious collisions.
The law is designed to protect you and everyone else while experience builds.
Passing the test gives you a licence.
Keeping it depends on how you drive afterwards.
