🔧 MACHINE SHOP & ENGINE ENGINEERING MANAGER – NORTH EAST

£45,000–£50,000 per year | 37.5 hours | Monday–Friday

We are looking for an experienced engine machinist/engineer to take responsibility for the running and development of our specialist engine machine shop.

This is a hands-on senior position – we need someone who can machine, solve problems, manage the department and improve the way we work.

We need someone with substantial experience in:

🔧 Cylinder boring & honing
🔧 Crankshaft grinding/regrinding & polishing
🔧 Cylinder head machining & repair
🔧 Precision measurement & working to tight tolerances
🔧 Manual/traditional engine machining equipment
🔧 Specialist and one-off engine repairs
🔧 Repairing obsolete engine components where replacement parts are unavailable
🔧 Making specialist tooling, jigs and fixtures

You will also be responsible for:

Running and organising the machine shop
Quality control of all machining work
Machine maintenance and servicing
Training and developing existing staff
Improving working methods, efficiency and quality
Recording job times and using computerised systems
Working closely with our engine builders and vehicle technicians to solve technical problems

We are looking for someone who understands engines and machining, not simply someone who knows how to operate a machine.

You need to be able to look at a damaged or unusual component and work out how it can be repaired, what needs machining, what tolerances are required and how to achieve the finished result.

Experience with Prince crankshaft grinding machinery or similar would be an advantage.

A relevant engineering/automotive qualification is desirable, but extensive practical experience will be considered in place of formal qualifications.

⚠️ Please note: this is a senior specialist position. General vehicle repair, basic machining or CNC-only experience will not be suitable.

If you are an experienced engine machinist who is ready to take technical responsibility for a machine shop and help develop it, we’d like to hear from you.

Another day another JLR Ingenium engine on our test bed. This one is a single turbo 204DTD for a Jaguar E pace being checked ready to be installed.

Another 5.0 JLR V8 rebuilt and now on our engine test bed.

Our test bed allows us to safely run the engine through its initial testing process, checking that oil pressure is building correctly and that oil is reaching all the areas it needs to, including the timing chain lubrication jets.

Once these initial checks are complete, we fit the front cover and rocker covers before carrying out a second test at higher RPM. This allows us to check compression and ensure the engine is performing as it should before it leaves our workshop.

Thorough testing is an important part of our remanufacturing process, helping us identify and resolve any issues before the engine is fitted into the vehicle.
