Unexpected surprises in the workshop this week! 🔧

At H R Auto Specialists Ltd, we had a Land Rover Freelander 2 come in with a fluid leak. After getting it on the ramp for an inspection, we traced the issue to a leaking front Power Transfer Unit (PTU).

Upon removal, we discovered that part of the original unit had actually broken off! We replaced it with a fully reconditioned PTU from Bell Engineering to get everything sealed, fitted, and running smoothly again.

Noticed an unusual leak or sound underneath your vehicle? Don't wait until a small issue turns into a big repair—bring it by or give us a call to get it checked out!

Restricted Performance? Not Always What You Expect…

This Discovery 4 SDV6 came in with a complaint of restricted performance.

As many of you will know, our first thought was the intake manifolds – a common issue on these engines.

Out came the smoke tester and we started checking the boost system. We tested the engine first with no leaks found, so it was time to work our way through the boost pipework and intercooler.

It didn’t take long before we found the culprit.

A sizeable leak was coming from the turbo shut-off valve. Once the new part arrived, we removed the old valve and the reason for the leak became obvious – the housing had cracked around the seal, allowing boost pressure to escape.

The new valve was fitted, the system was smoke tested again, and everything checked out perfectly.

Just because a fault points towards a common problem doesn’t mean that’s always the cause. A thorough diagnosis saves time, avoids unnecessary parts, and gets the vehicle repaired properly the first time.

If your Land Rover is suffering from restricted performance or a loss of power, get in touch and let us find the real cause.

🛠️ Diagnostics Matter: A Mercedes Tale of "Coincidences"

We love a good puzzle, but we love saving our customers time and money even more. Recently, this Mercedes came to see us at H R Auto Specialists Ltd after a routine service at another garage left it with a major headache: an ongoing oil pressure warning light.

🔍 The "Coincidence" That Wasn’t

The original mechanic diagnosed it as a faulty oil pressure sensor. But to us, a warning light popping up immediately after a service felt like too much of a coincidence.

We decided to go back to basics and inspect the work that had just been done. Sure enough, after draining the oil and pulling the filter, we found the oil filter had been fitted incorrectly. A simple mistake by the previous mechanic, but one that could have cost the owner an entire engine if left ignored! We replaced the oil and filter properly, and just like that—oil pressure is completely back to normal. No expensive sensor needed.

💧 The Mystery Coolant Leak

While it was in, the owner asked us to look into a persistent coolant leak that the previous mechanic just couldn't trace.

Challenge accepted. Our team tracked the leak down to the coolant shut-off valve (the valve responsible for helping the engine warm up efficiently). It was hiding a hairline crack, slowly weeping fluid. We swapped out the faulty valve, flushed the system, and topped it up with fresh coolant.

🏆 The Moral of the Story?

Not all garages are created equal. When your car is trying to tell you something, it takes a specialist eye to look past the dashboard codes and find the real root cause.

🚗 Driving a Mercedes, BMW, Audi, or VW? Don't settle for guesswork. Bring it to the specialists who do it right the first time.

Hot day + blowing warm air = a very sad drive. 🥵

This Honda Jazz Hybrid came into H R Auto Specialists Ltd today for what the owner hoped was a simple air con regas. However, our team did a thorough system check first and spotted the real culprit: a leaking condenser! 🔍❌

Instead of breaking the bank with an expensive genuine manufacturer part, we sourced and fitted a high-quality aftermarket unit. The result? The exact same perfect fit and performance, but at a fraction of the cost of the original part. 💰🙌

We then vacuum-tested the system, filled it up with the correct eco-friendly R1234yf gas, and now it’s blowing ice-cold again! ❄️🚗

Don't just sweat it out this summer—if your air con isn't performing, let the team at H R Auto Specialists catch the issue before it gets worse.

Discovery 4 – Restricted Performance

The words that most Discovery 4 owners never want to see appear on the dashboard.

From experience, one of the first things that comes to mind is the dreaded cracked intake manifold, a common fault that can cause a range of performance issues. However, we never assume – diagnosis always comes first.

We started with a smoke test to check for boost and intake leaks. This quickly revealed a severely leaking Y-pipe, which was certainly contributing to the restricted performance warning. Further investigation also confirmed that the intake manifold had indeed failed.

With the faults identified, we carried out the necessary repairs and a few additional maintenance items while the vehicle was with us:

🔧 Replacement intake manifold
🔧 Replacement Y-pipe seals
🔧 Auxiliary belt
🔧 Idler pulley
🔧 Start-stop battery
🔧 Electronic handbrake switch

A thorough diagnosis and the correct repairs have this Discovery 4 back to full performance and ready for many more miles.

VW Transporter T6

In for its annual service and inspection. During our checks, we identified a failing intercooler that was starting to deteriorate. Thankfully, this was caught early before it could lead to boost leaks, performance issues, or further engine-related faults.

A replacement intercooler was fitted, restoring the system back to full health and ensuring the van continues to perform as Volkswagen intended.

Regular servicing isn’t just about oil and filters – it’s often the difference between a simple repair and a much bigger bill later on.

This Defender TDCi arrived with transmission issues, so before reaching for the spanners we started with oil samples to see what was happening inside.

The colour of the transfer box oil wasn’t encouraging, but when parts of the transfer box started falling out with it, we knew exactly where the problem was!

A new transfer box was supplied by our friends at Ashcroft Transmissions, and while we were in there we fitted one of their upgraded intermediate shafts to eliminate the well-known weak point found in the standard setup.

As is often the case with Defenders, one job turned into a few more. The rear brakes were due some attention, so it received new discs, pads and calipers. We also had to replace a hub after discovering damage caused by previously snapped drive fl**ge bolts.

A fair bit of work, but it’s all back together, driving as it should, and ready for its next adventure.

There’s nothing quite like bringing a Defender back from the brink and getting it back out where it belongs.
