🚗 What’s hiding inside your diesel fuel filter?

This is a diesel fuel filter removed from a vehicle during servicing — and as you can see, the fuel inside certainly wasn’t looking healthy. 😬

The fuel had obvious signs of contamination.

Contaminated fuel can contain water, dirt, rust or other debris, and can cause serious problems for modern diesel fuel systems.

The fuel filter’s job is to protect the high-pressure fuel system and injectors by filtering out dirt, debris and water from the fuel.

Over time, the filter can become contaminated or restricted, which can lead to:

🔧 Poor starting
⚠️ Loss of power
🚗 Poor running
⛽ Reduced fuel system performance
💷 And potentially expensive fuel-system repairs

A relatively inexpensive filter can help protect some very expensive components further down the fuel system.

🚨 DID YOU KNOW?

Your tyre pressure warning light could cause an MOT failure!

TPMS explained 👇

TPMS became a requirement for new passenger car types from 1 November 2012.

From 1 November 2014, all new passenger cars being registered had to be equipped with a compliant TPMS.

❌ CAN TPMS FAIL YOUR MOT?

YES!

For M1 vehicles first used on or after 1 January 2012, the TPMS system is inspected as part of the MOT.

A TPMS that is malfunctioning or obviously not working is a MAJOR defect — meaning an MOT failure.

🔧 Not quite how you expect to find a job…

Today we had a vehicle in after a coil spring had previously been fitted incorrectly.

We stripped it down, corrected the installation and refitted everything properly, making sure the spring and strut assembly were sitting exactly as they should. 🔧

But while carrying out the repair, we also discovered a little message from whoever had worked on it previously… “F* U” written on the strut top mount. 🤦‍♂️😂 Someone was obviously having a bad day.

At Durham Auto Services, we believe the job should be done properly — regardless of who worked on the vehicle before.

🔧 Range Rover Evoque – Timing Chain Replacement 🔧

This Range Rover Evoque with the 2.0 Ingenium engine was in with for engine light diagnostics, a camshaft sensor fault was present and stretched timing chain suspected. The upper timing cover was removed and fault confirmed.

These engines can develop timing chain stretch very quickly, this car has just 40000 miles 😦

Both primary and secondary timing chains, guides and tensioners replaced carefully using Genuine Land Rover parts and the vehicle is now back on the road running as it should ✅

🔧 Oil Leak? 🔧

This vehicle came in with an oil leak, which after cleaning off all the old oil was traced back to a failed crankshaft oil seal and worn crankshaft pulley.

If left unchecked, leaks like this can lead to serious (and expensive) engine damage.

The faulty seal and pulley were replaced and everything cleaned down and checked — no more leaks and back on the road safely ✅

If you’ve noticed oil spots on the driveway or a burning oil smell, it’s always best to get it inspected early.

The transmission oil was changed using Genuine BMW/Mini parts and the correct follow up procedures carried out with the diagnostic computer.

🔧 Today in the Workshop 🔧

Had a nice Golf GTD in the workshop today for a timing belt kit with water pump and DSG gearbox service. The customer had purchased the car with no history of the timing belt being replaced so wisely chose to have it done for peace of mind - and it’s a good thing he did.

On inspection, the water pump was found to be leaking, so replacing this has prevented further coolant loss, future overheating or possibly even engine damage.

A DSG gearbox oil and filter service was also carried out to keep the transmission shifting smoothly and reliably. Specialist filling equipment was used and the oil level checked at the correct temperature to ensure everything was perfect.

The vehicles digital service history was also updated so any future owners of the vehicle will have the confidence that the work has already been completed.

Preventative maintenance like this saves customers from much bigger repair bills down the line 💪
