Some tuning work we carried out on this little 1.6TDCi Ford Fiesta van!

This generation of 1.6 diesel Fiesta’s use a Bosch EDC17C10 engine ECU and output around 95hp in standard form. They are coupled with a relatively small turbocharger which means power gains are not as brilliant as you might expect to see from a turbo diesel.

After a few revisions of maximising the power whilst maintaining drivability and the all important exhaust gas temperatures as well as correct air fuel ratio we settled on an estimated 115-120hp. Which makes a fair difference to this quite underpowered van!

This Mini Cooper was left with us following the engine management light appearing on the dashboard!

We began our diagnosis by reading the fault codes stored in the engine ECU memory, here we found a fault code relating to the adjustment of the exhaust camshaft timing. We moved over to look at some live data for the camshaft adjusters and noticed that the exhaust camshaft wasn’t adjusting at all!

In simple terms these camshaft adjusters are moved by oil pressure, this oil pressure is controlled by a solenoid which has two parts, an electrical part and a mechanical part. Usually the two parts of the solenoid are combined into one and are inseparable, however on this engine they are actually separate. This allowed us to swap the electrical part from the exhaust camshaft to the intake camshaft for testing purposes. Following this swap we found the fault to still be present on the exhaust camshaft, thus confirming the electrical part of the solenoid was okay!

During our swap of the electrical part of the solenoid we had a look & feel of the mechanical part and noticed that on the exhaust camshaft, the mechanical part was actually slightly sticky, this prompted us to remove the mechanical parts of the camshaft solenoid.

Now on these engines the mechanical part of the solenoid is actually part of the camshaft sprocket securing bolt, so we dismantled the camshaft cover and fitted some locking tools to keep the camshafts & crankshaft locked in place. The solenoids were then removed for inspection and damage was found to the exhaust camshaft solenoid!

After fitting two new solenoids (no point leaving an old intake one in there) we re-assembled the camshaft cover and associated parts before carrying out some more live data testing. Here we found both camshafts to be responding as they should thus confirming our repair!

Some more Ford Transit 2.0 “wet belt” action in the workshop over the last few weeks!

It’s a sensible decision to get these belts changed before they inevitably strip the teeth off and cause some significant internal engine damage and that was the case here with the owner opting to change it at 63’000 miles on this particular van!

We often get asked what the replacement interval is on these belts and to be honest it should be ASAP as they’re getting a strong reputation for failing at around half the manufacturers recommended replacement interval!

Thankfully no such terrible woes with this van, some slight belt shards caught in the oil pump strainer but nothing too serious!

Calling all Ford Ranger owners!

Our mechanic Kiegan absolutely hates working on these, they are big, heavy, awkward lumps of usually quite corroded steel, it promotes some quite colourful phrases from him!

Now I like to think we’re quite old school here at Dunfermline MOT, so we label this frustration from the youngest member of our team as character building!

In summary, if you could bring us as many Ford Rangers as you can, the more broken the better! It’ll allow us to keep at this character building and maybe forge out one of the best Ranger mechanics around!

P.S before you all lose your mind this is just a joke🙄

This Fiat Punto was with us last week for a timing belt replacement!

We’re always banging on about how important it is to keep on top of preventative maintenance and the timing belt is arguably the most famous example!

Make sure it gets changed within the recommended replacement interval set out by the vehicle manufacturer, otherwise the belt is at increased risk of breaking and causing avoidable internal engine damage!

Each manufacturer sets out slightly different replacement intervals for their timing systems depending on which timing system the vehicle uses. If you’d like any advice on replacement intervals for your vehicle please get in touch, we’d be happy to offer guidance on replacement intervals!

Here’s another riveting episode of guess the problem!

Hints.
1. The tyre pressure warning light was illuminated on the dashboard.
2. It had very recently had a new tyre fitted on this wheel.

Yeah, you guessed it, that noise is the broken tyre pressure monitoring sensor bouncing around inside the tyre!
