Congratulations to Zack, who passed his driving test yesterday in Perth.

Although Perth isn't an area we normally cover, Zack secured a test there and was prepared to put in the extra effort. Over the last few weeks, we made the journey north to become familiar with the roads, layouts, and driving conditions he would encounter on test day.

Zack approached every lesson in the same way: he listened carefully, arrived prepared, and worked diligently on the areas that needed improvement. That commitment paid off with a well-earned pass.

Congratulations, Zack. Safe driving, and all the best for the future.

One question I often get asked is:

"How do I know if I'm making progress?"

Learning to drive isn't just about counting lessons.
That's why every pupil has a progress record linked to the DVSA syllabus. It helps identify what's been covered, what needs more practice, and what comes next.

Some skills click quickly. Others take time and repetition.

What matters is understanding where you are in the process and building confidence step by step.

That's how steady progress is made.

The difference between watching the road and using it becomes clear quite quickly in lessons. As a pedestrian, you can wait and react.�If something doesn’t feel right, you stop.

As a driver, you don’t have that same margin.

By the time something feels wrong, you’re already part of it.

That’s why driving depends on what you do early. Noticing how a situation is developing.�Adjusting your speed before you reach it.�Leaving space so you have time to respond. This is where time, speed and space all come together.

Good driving isn’t built on quick reactions.�It’s built on giving yourself fewer situations to react to.

One of the most common things I see in lessons isn’t a lack of effort. It’s missed information. A pupil will check a junction, see that it looks clear, and move.

The problem is what happens in between.

Your eyes don’t take in everything continuously. They jump from point to point, and in those small gaps, things can change.

A car appears. A pedestrian steps forward. A situation develops.

Good observation isn’t just about looking once.�It’s about giving yourself time to look again.

That’s why slowing things down early matters.

Around this time of year, I often hear:

“Is there enough time to pass before September?”

At the moment, the honest answer is no.

Test waiting times are long, and availability is limited. Even once a pupil is driving well, securing a test date isn’t something that can be relied on in the short term. With upcoming changes to how tests are booked, that may become even more difficult.

That doesn’t mean it’s not worth starting.

Learning to drive still takes time to build properly. Skills need to move from being introduced, to being understood, to being carried out consistently without prompting. That process doesn’t change, regardless of test dates.

Starting now means using that time well. Building experience, developing good habits, and being ready when a test does become available.

Most people leave school as experienced road viewers.�Very few leave as road users.

From a young age, you learn to watch traffic. You judge when it’s safe to cross, you notice when something doesn’t look right, and you react to what’s happening around you.

Driving is different.

You’re no longer watching and reacting. You’re responsible for what happens next.
That means learning to:

- read the road ahead, not just what’s in front of you
- understand how speed affects time and space
- make decisions early, not at the last moment

This is why the early stages of learning to drive can feel like a lot to take in. It’s not just about moving the car. It’s about learning to think in a completely different way.
That shift, from road viewer to road user, is where proper driving begins.
