Turning 17 soon? You can start preparing now.

Your first driving lesson might begin when you're 17, but learning about driving can start much earlier.

Before you ever get behind the wheel, you can begin getting familiar with:

• The Highway Code and road signs
• Theory test questions
• Hazard perception
• Junctions and roundabouts
• Observation, speed and positioning
• How other road users behave and why hazards develop

I encourage pupils to work on their theory alongside their practical lessons. The two aren't separate parts of learning to drive. What you learn for your theory helps you understand what's happening around you when you're actually driving.

There's also plenty of support available throughout your lessons, including progress records, pupil resources and additional material to help with subjects we've covered in the car.

If your 17th birthday is approaching, you can get in touch beforehand to discuss lessons and arrange your first one in advance. You can even make your first driving lesson part of your 17th birthday, subject to availability.

Learning to drive shouldn't feel like being thrown in at the deep end.

One of the things I hear quite often is:

"I thought my first lesson would be much more daunting than it actually was."

That's because confidence isn't something that appears overnight. It's built one lesson at a time.

At Blackwood School of Motoring, every lesson has a clear purpose. We start with solid foundations, build skills step by step, and only move on when you're ready.

Along the way you'll receive:

• A structured lesson plan based on the DVSA syllabus.

• A personal progress record, so you always know how you're getting on.

• Help with both your Theory Test and Practical Test.

• Access to online learning resources to support your lessons.

Learning to drive isn't about getting through a checklist as quickly as possible. It's about understanding what you're doing and developing the confidence to make good decisions every time you get behind the wheel.

If you're thinking about starting lessons this summer, or already have some driving experience and would like to continue your learning, I'd be happy to have a chat.

Thinking about driving lessons? Here's what you can expect at Blackwood School of Motoring.

Learning to drive is one of the most valuable life skills you'll ever learn. My aim isn't simply to prepare you for a driving test, but to help you become a safe, confident and thoughtful driver for life.

Here's what every pupil can expect:

✔ Lessons structured around the official DVSA syllabus.

✔ A personal progress record, so you always know what you've covered and what comes next.

✔ Clear explanations of why things are done, not just how to do them.

✔ Support with both the Theory Test and Practical Test, including guidance, resources and advice throughout your learning.

✔ Access to a growing library of online learning resources, lesson guides and local driving information.

✔ A calm, patient approach where lessons are adapted to your progress, not simply the calendar.

✔ Time for preparation, planning and feedback, so every lesson has a clear purpose and builds on the last.

Whether you're taking your very first lesson, returning after a break, or already have some driving experience, you're very welcome to get in touch.

Have a look around the page, explore the website and, if you have any questions, just send me a message.

Congratulations to Zack, who passed his driving test yesterday in Perth.

Although Perth isn't an area we normally cover, Zack secured a test there and was prepared to put in the extra effort. Over the last few weeks, we made the journey north to become familiar with the roads, layouts, and driving conditions he would encounter on test day.

Zack approached every lesson in the same way: he listened carefully, arrived prepared, and worked diligently on the areas that needed improvement. That commitment paid off with a well-earned pass.

Congratulations, Zack. Safe driving, and all the best for the future.

One question I often get asked is:

"How do I know if I'm making progress?"

Learning to drive isn't just about counting lessons.
That's why every pupil has a progress record linked to the DVSA syllabus. It helps identify what's been covered, what needs more practice, and what comes next.

Some skills click quickly. Others take time and repetition.

What matters is understanding where you are in the process and building confidence step by step.

That's how steady progress is made.

The difference between watching the road and using it becomes clear quite quickly in lessons. As a pedestrian, you can wait and react. If something doesn’t feel right, you stop.

As a driver, you don’t have that same margin.

By the time something feels wrong, you’re already part of it.

That’s why driving depends on what you do early. Noticing how a situation is developing.Adjusting your speed before you reach it.Leaving space so you have time to respond. This is where time, speed and space all come together.

Good driving isn’t built on quick reactions. It’s built on giving yourself fewer situations to react to.
