Failing Mod 1 or Mod 2, or any motorcycle test, can knock your confidence far more than people sometimes realise.

You may know you can ride. Your instructor may know you can ride. But when you hear that you haven’t passed, it can quickly turn into: “Maybe I’m just not good enough at this.”

A failed test does mean that, on that day, you didn’t demonstrate everything required to the necessary standard. There may be something technical that needs more work, and that’s important to acknowledge.

But it doesn’t tell you the whole story about your ability as a rider.

Pressure changes how we perform. One mistake can lead to overthinking, tension and trying so hard not to make another mistake that your attention moves away from what is happening in front of you.

And this is why learning how to manage nerves is a skill in its own right.

Look at high performers in sport, exams, interviews, public speaking, stage acting or other pressured environments. The strongest performers are not necessarily the people who never feel nervous. They're the ones who learn how to recognise those nerves, regulate themselves and still access the skills and knowledge they already have.

Motorcycle tests are no different.

So after a fail, look at the facts.

What actually happened? What does your instructor think needs work? Was it a skill issue, a pressure issue, or a bit of both? Did one mistake affect everything that followed? What can you practise differently before the next attempt?

Be disappointed if you need to be. Learn from it properly. Then move forward.

One test result does not decide whether you belong on a motorcycle.

If test nerves, overthinking or fear of failing again are getting in the way of showing what you can do, I can help you develop the mindset skills to manage that pressure and approach your next attempt differently.

As a BMF member you'll receive 15% off my 1:1 mindset coaching.

Looking to take your riding to the next level? If you hold a full motorcycle licence, the BMF Blue Riband Advanced Rider training programme is a great way to enhance your skills, confidence and enjoyment on the road.
