Also, don’t forget your provisional licence! Your test cannot go ahead unless you have your licence with you. It’s the first thing the examiner will check, so make sure you have it with you!

An eyesight check 👀
You'll read a number plate from 20 metres away or 20.5 metres if it's an old-style plate.

'Show me, tell me' vehicle safety questions 💭
You'll answer 2 questions about vehicle safety. The 'tell me' question comes before you start driving and the 'show me' question while you're on the move.

General driving ability ✅
You'll drive on a variety of roads, but not on motorways, including 20 to 35 minutes of independent driving, following either a sat nav, traffic signs, or both.

Reversing your vehicle 🚗
You'll be asked to do one of the following: parallel park, park in a bay, or pull up on the right and reverse 2 car lengths. Your examiner will let you know which one.

Knowing what's coming can make test day feel a lot less daunting.

Thank you, Caitlyn, for leaving me this lovely review.

I just want to say a huge thank you to every person who puts their trust in me.

I genuinely love helping people through their driving journey and, ultimately, seeing them achieve that pass. It’s not always an easy journey. There are highs, lows, frustrations and plenty of moments where you have to dig deep and keep going.

For one person, it might be a reversing manoeuvre that feels impossible. For another, it might be roundabouts, meeting traffic or simply finding the confidence to believe in themselves.

But overcoming those weaknesses, building your confidence and staying determined is what gets you to that finish line.

So when I’m sitting anxiously waiting back at the test centre for those 40 minutes, I know that the result is down to their work, their effort and their determination.

I can teach, guide, support and encourage — but the pupils are the ones who take everything they’ve learned and put it into practice.

People might see a pass picture, but I know the story behind it — the drive, the lessons, the setbacks, the hard work and everything that went into earning that licence. 💙

Not ready for your driving test?

Don’t be afraid to move it back.

The DVSA’s own Ready to Pass? campaign says you’ll usually be ready when:
✅ You can drive without prompts from your instructor
✅ You’re not making serious or dangerous mistakes
✅ You can pass mock driving tests
✅ You’ve practised managing your nerves
✅ Your instructor agrees you’re ready.

And here’s a statistic worth thinking about…
48 out of every 100 driving tests were failed in Great Britain in July 2026.

Taking a test before you're ready can mean paying for another test, waiting longer for another opportunity and potentially knocking your confidence.

The DVSA actually advises learners to move their test back if they’re not feeling ready, giving them more time to brush up their skills, complete more mock tests and practise managing their nerves.

But don't leave it until the last minute!
Under the current rules, you can make 2 changes to a car driving test booking.
If you want to change your test without having to pay again, you need to give at least 10 full working days' notice.

Monday–Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays don't.

What about swapping your test?
You can swap your test with another learner, but there are rules:
• You must both already have a test booked
• You must both have at least one change remaining
• You must agree to swap your exact test date, time and centre
• The swap must be requested at least 10 full working days before the earliest test
• The swap counts as one of your 2 changes
• You have to arrange the swap yourself — your instructor can't do it for you.

Remember...your test date isn't the goal. Being ready to drive safely on your own is.

One of the best parts of being a driving instructor is building relationships with pupils and watching them reach their goals.

🎉 FIRST-TIME PASS FOR CAITLYN! 🎉

What a way to start the day! 8am test this morning in Haddington.

Caitlyn started her very first driving lesson with me back in February, with no previous driving experience but a whole load of determination. And 7 months later… she’s passed her driving test FIRST TIME with just 3 driving faults! 🥳👏

Caitlyn has achieved all of this with just her driving lessons and no private practice in between! What an achievement!

Caitlyn really made me laugh this morning at the test centre while we were waiting.. she said there should be a sofa to make it more welcoming and that the waiting room looked like a prison cell... Just with LOTS of posters on the walls! 😂😂

It has been such a pleasure teaching you, Caitlyn. You worked so hard, stayed determined and never gave up. And now you've got your dream car waiting for you! 🚗✨

Before your driving test, tick these off your list. 📝🚗

Test day nerves are normal, but this checklist means you’ll have one less thing to worry about.

Here's what you need to bring with you to your driving test:

✅ Your UK driving licence. If you have a licence from Northern Ireland, you need to bring the Northern Ireland photocard, paper counterpart and theory certificate (if taken in Northern Ireland).

✅ A car that meets the rules, whether it's your instructor's or your own.
