A bit of a strange one this week, this Ford Transit came to us after loosing engine power and then failing to restart.
The engine ecu (PCM) had faults stored for low fuel level causing a non start situation.
The fuel gauge was reading zero and the fuel pump and tank sender unit had been replaced by another garage before the vehicle coming to us. The tank was full of diesel!

The wiring diagrams showed us that the fuel sender unit went back to the body control module.

We carried out wiring checks to the fuel pump along with the wiring for the fuel level sender unit, which both came back as ok.

By checking live data of the instrument cluster, we could see that the information supplied to the cluster was showing that the fuel level was low.

We then checked the wiring from the bcm to cluster which also tested as ok.

The bcm was then opened to check for corrosion, a common issue on transits. It was spotlessly clean inside! After exhausting all other tests, it was believed to be faulty.

A replacement was sourced, coded to the vehicle and then the keys readapted to the module and immobiliser. The vehicle then started and ran perfectly 😃

This Porsche gave us and the customer a bit of a shock recently!!

A routine engine management/emission fault lead us down a path of checking wiring after we found a missing feed for one of the exhaust oxygen sensors. After studying the wiring diagrams, we traced the wiring back from the engine compartment into the cabin, where we were met with a huge mouse nest!! We were able to locate the chewed wires and clean out the nest… no rodents were found though!! 🐁🐭🐁🪤

A nice little wiring job on a Mitsubishi Outlander recently!

This job came in from a trade customer, needed urgently as it had been sold and the customer needed the car urgently.

The reported fault was that the passenger window wouldn’t open from the drivers side switch, and it would only go up from the passenger switch. Another garage had already replaced both switches and the passenger side window motor! 🙈

After studying the wiring diagram and carrying out some wiring checks for feeds and earths, we were able to determine that the earth was missing from the lowering circuit at the passenger switch. The wire between the two doors was found to be open circuit and after stripping down the door looms, a broken wire was found. The loom was pulled back into the drivers door and the wire lengthened with the correct gauge of wire so that there were no joins in the flexible part of the loom, to prevent the fault reoccurring.

After a quick function test, the car was reassembled and went off to its new owner!

Well we missed the summer but managed to get the beach buggy out of storage for the first time in two years today! A bit of air in the tyres and some fresh fuel, and she drove lovely!
Was a nice, (if a bit cold!!) drive around the South Downs lanes for a few minutes between jobs! 😁

Today we carried out a repair on a ford focus that had outfoxed a couple of other garages!

The car would intermittently not start and display lots of warning messages, something that we have seen before! We carried out some diagnosis and wiring checks and quickly confirmed that the instrument cluster was at fault.
After removing the cluster, we stripped it down to its component parts to access the circuit board, where we inspected the solder joints with a digital microscope. We confirmed that the solder joints had indeed cracked and were causing the CAN network to be interrupted intermittently, leading to the reported faults.
We resoldered the joints, reassembled the cluster and fitted it back into the car.

All that was left was to erase the faults and give the car a quick roadtest, all was well and the customer went away happy!

Although there are companies out there that offer this repair as a mail order service, there aren’t many local garages (any that we know of actually!?) that carry out this work “in house” cutting down on the time the car is off the road.
