Here at Veloce, we’ve just published a new Substack post featuring an exclusive extract from Designing Dreams by former General Motors designer Dick Ruzzin.

This extract goes inside the Motorama era at GM, when design was doing far more than shaping cars 🚗 It was shaping identity, reputation, and the future of the company itself.

Long before “branding” became a buzzword, Harley Earl and his team were already building distinct identities for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, and Cadillac through design alone. Concept cars weren’t just showpieces for the public, they were tools that helped shape the production cars people would eventually buy.

It’s a fascinating look at a time when American car design was at its peak, and when Detroit really did feel like the centre of the automotive world 🌍

If you’re into classic cars, GM history, or the golden age of American design, this one is well worth a read.

Dive into this exclusive extract on how GM built identity through Motorama and divisional design long before modern branding existed

A pre-order reminder: The Nissan GT-R

Nissan’s GT-R is more than just a performance car, it is a true modern legend. Evolving from its early Skyline roots into a world-renowned symbol of Japanese engineering, the GT-R has built its reputation on both road and track.

The Nissan GT-R presents the complete story for the first time in one definitive volume.

Beginning with the early GT-R models, rarely documented in English, the book goes on to explore the iconic R32, R33, and R34 generations in detail, including their development, variants, and motorsport success.

It concludes with the R35, a car that brought the GT-R firmly into the modern era and redefined expectations of performance on a global scale.

With production now drawing to a close, this book captures the full legacy of the GT-R at a significant moment in its history.

Featuring rare photography, technical data, and motorsport insight, this is a fitting record of one of Japan’s most influential performance cars.

New post now live on Substack 📚

In this extract, we explore Cranswick on Classic Chevrolet Corvette 1953–1996.

The 1956 Corvette was more than a styling update. It marked a true turning point in the car’s development.

Once dismissed as the “Plastic Bathtub,” the Corvette went on to set records at Daytona 🏁 and prove its strength at Sebring. This was the moment Chevrolet’s early sports car design began to earn genuine credibility on the road and the track 🚗

Inside the post: Harley Earl’s redesign, Zora Arkus-Duntov’s engineering input, and how motorsport success helped transform the Corvette into a serious American performance car.

If you want to understand how China went from making budget run-arounds to building some of the most competitive electric cars in the world, it helps to go back to where it all really started. 📚

At Veloce, this week on Substack we’ve published an exclusive extract from Driving the Dragon. Chapter 1: The Wrong Way, set in Shanghai in the mid-2000s, captures a city (and a car industry) in a very different era.

It’s a first-hand account from author Mark Andrews, who was living in Shanghai at the time, working as a writer, teaching English, and slowly finding his way into automotive journalism. One taxi ride, one rebadged British saloon, and a fair bit of persistence later, he finds himself close to a much bigger story about how China’s car industry was beginning to take shape.

For anyone who remembers the Rover 75, the collapse of MG Rover, or the days when Chinese cars barely registered in Europe, this one will feel both familiar and surprising in equal measure 🚗.
