With our up to date improvements and investments over the last few years to offer the ultimate Scooter Workshop Services we’ve gone and bought a new Laser clearer.
Only cost nearly £10K!!!! But we’re using it everyday so a worth while investment.
This really is space age stuff and has brought us forwards in leaps and bounds!
What does it do?
It cleans and burns away grease, oil, paint, under seal and rust!
It can be adjusted down to clean bodywork paint - like T cutting, it can clean away rust and if done right can patina and clean an original bike that just needs waxing afterwards. It can be adjusted up to burn off paint and burns and eats into rust.
It works on steel, aluminium, plastic and rubber! And if I wanted I can clean glass, wood and concrete!
It’s totally adjustable for strength, depth, width and different sign waves to suit what ever I want to work on.
We’ve done some pre set programs to work just for me, which is usually a heavy blast to degrease a part, to strip paint, clean the metal and kill rust.
It’s absolutely perfect for frame welds, I can clean off the crud and get down to bare metal, burn out rust to find a hidden crack whilst at the same time it’s prepared the metal to weld directly to, with no grinding in hard places and no contamination! Even after welding, it can also clean the new welds and steel so it looks like new!
It’s a god send when welding aluminium - something thats been a bug bare for ever. Instead of cleaning, grinding and removing the invisible skin that contaminates the weld, now I laser the crack/joint areas and you can weld straight onto it, even if the casing is covered in oxidization! Then if I’m welding away and the usual Black soot contamination comes out like a volcano, instead of grinding back again on a hot casing I can laser clean it and the soot disappears and the alloy is cleaned and I can can carry on welding alloy which is like new!
I’ve used it for all sorts of jobs - de coking pistons, cylinder ports, gasket faces, alloy castings, steel bodywork - and the list goes on! No wet or dry blasting in a cabinet that needs washing and cleaning off and drying afterwards. No messy paint st****er and no need to use the grinders and I don’t need a special room, I can do it inside or out side.
One job I hate doing is cleaning gasket faces with near impossible different types of gasket sealer stuck to the faces. All I do is re set the size of the laser to burn off the crap and the gasket faces come up clean, dry and etched ready to go again without damaging or etching anything other than the gasket face - easy!
The machine is portable, it’s powered by single phase - a 3 pin socket. All it needs is an air supply which we have lots of. You need to wear special glasses or face masks and ideally if you’re doing a lot, a filtered breathing mask. I add a fan to blow the dust away from the laser lens as dust and a laser lens doesn’t mix and you need to extract the dust which our welding fume extractor works perfect.
Those who’s had the tour of our workshop are blown away with the equipment we have to cover all aspects of restoration, welding, tuning, machining, repairs, rebuilding and development.
Now I’ve said this before - if you want to take your valuable repair work to someone down the road, or a mate in the pub who works from a shed in the garden - would you trust him to give you the best possible repair with out all the equipment
