🔧 Land Rover Discovery Sport – Timing Chain System Replacement 🔧

This Land Rover Discovery Sport arrived at Currys Motors, Devizes with a pronounced timing chain rattle, particularly noticeable during cold starts and at idle a common symptom of timing chain elongation and guide wear on these engines.

Following diagnosis, the vehicle was stripped down to gain access to the front timing assembly. Inspection revealed excessive wear within the timing chain system, including deterioration of the chain guides and tensioning components.

The repair involved:

✔️ Removal of front engine components and timing cover
✔️ Replacement of the primary timing chain assembly
✔️ Renewal of chain guides and hydraulic tensioners
✔️ Camshaft and crankshaft timing verification using manufacturer locking tools
✔️ Reassembly with new seals and gaskets where required
✔️ Post repair testing and verification of engine operation

Accurate camshaft to crankshaft correlation is critical on modern common rail diesel engines, and wear within the timing drive system can lead to timing deviation, fault codes, poor performance, and in severe cases, catastrophic engine damage.

With the new timing components installed and timing correctly set, the engine is now running quietly and smoothly, restoring reliability and customer confidence.

While carrying out the repair and inspection on the ramp, we discovered a rust hole in the front subframe something that could have become a serious issue if left unnoticed. 👨‍🔧🔍

The customer is currently sourcing a replacement subframe for us to fit, and we’ll get this Forester back on the road safely once the parts arrive.
