FINECUT RADICAL CUP UK – DONINGTON PARK – ROUND FOUR PREVIEW

The University of Derby hope to clinch their second successive Radical racing title at Donington Park this weekend, when Gordie Mutch starts with a 27 point advantage over Valour Racing’s Cian Geraghty in the Finecut Radical Cup UK.

Fresh from second and third in last weekends World Finals at the Catalunya Circuit, Mutch has won four out of five of the races so far. His only non-victory came in the second race of the year when a stall in the pitlane at Brands Hatch after the mandatory stop, gave Geraghty victory, with Mutch recovering to take third.

Geraghty had been on the podium for every race this season too, until he was forced to pit from the lead to serve a late penalty in race two at Silverstone and was eventually classified eighth.

Like Geraghty North Motorsport’s Thomas Hodge is in his first season of car racing, after a successful karting career. His best result came in race two at Brands Hatch taking second, but was third in the race at Oulton Park too.

Scott Marshall and Ryan Lindsay have been the only Team entry in this years Championship so far. It hasn’t stopped them taking three top 10 finishers though, finally classified third in the last race at Silverstone, after a raft of penalties had been given, promoting them from seventh on the road. They are now fourth overall too.

Currently leading the Fangio Class is 360 Competitions Andy Lowe, with an 18 point cushion over RSR’s John Macleod. As well as their continuing UK rivalry, both drivers have been contesting the Radical Europe Championship too and were in last weekends World Finals.

Fourth overall at Oulton Park was Lowe’s best so far, with Macleod matching that result in race two at Brands, before giving Oulton a miss.

Valour Racing’s Byron Crawford only started racing last year, but has come on leaps and bounds this season. He’s currently third in the Fangio Trophy and seventh overall, looking for his first top six after finishing seventh at Oulton.

The season started with lots of promise for Shane Kelly in the University of Wolverhampton car. Third in the opening race at Brands Hatch, but various issues caused their title hopes to fade. They were back on the pace at Silvertone though, second on the road in the final race, until penalties dropped them to 10th.

Matt Yard has been the most consistent of the RJ Motorsport team and is currently ninth in the points. He only started racing last season and fifth at Oulton is his best so far.

Tim Gray Motorsport’s Sam Venning has also ventured into Europe. His pace hasn’t always been reflected in his results and he will be looking to improve on sixth at Oulton to secure his place in the final top 10 of the Championship.

It’s been a disappointing year for Brian Huang too, the RJ driver has had a number of incidents that have plagued his year and has to look back to Brands Hatch race two for his best result of sixth.

Laura O’Connell made her Radical debut at Donington last year. Her pace has visibly increased over the year and a number of personal targets have been met for the RJ driver.

There’s a second team entry this weekend with Lena Galyo due to share with Alicja Cyrek at Valour Racing. Galyo came through Hungarian karting and made her Radical debut at Donington last year too. She’s been entered for most of the rounds this year, but is yet to make a start.

Polish racer Cyrek is due to make her debut this this weekend having won the Racing Women Global Competition.

Finally US teen Gio Santori will be making his Radical debut with North Motorsport. After a successful global karting career, he won a one week F4 Scholarship in France, before racing in the UK Mini Challenge this season, taking two podium finishers in the Rookie Cup.

The action starts on Saturday morning with a 25 minute qualifying session at 10.20, before race one sets off at 15.55.

It’s lights out for race two on Sunday afternoon at 13.45, with both races over 50 minutes to crown our 2026 Champions.

WALKINSHAW BROTHERS FIRST RACE TOGETHER!!

Despite having been born into the motorsport world, Ryan and Sean Walkinshaw not only raced together for the first time in the Fun Cup Endurance UK Championship at Silverstone, but it was Ryan’s first race ever.

Son’s of the legendary racer and team boss Tom Walkinshaw of Rover, Mazda, Jaguar and Holden fame, their career paths had both gone in separate directions within the sport.

Although Sean raced Formula Renault and Formula 3 in the UK, he is better known for GT and Endurance Racing worldwide and has spent the last six years in Japan with Hitotsuyama Racing in the Super Taikyu Championship.

“Ryan had always wanted to race, so I spoke to our Mum and we decided on the Fun Cup as an early Christmas and New Year present. He then wanted me to race with him, so he did two tests in the cars at Silverstone earlier in the year as preparation, and here we are. He’s not the slowest for saying he’s never raced before, he’s a fast learner and we are here for Fun,” said Sean.

“I always wanted to go karting as a kid, but Dad wanted me to focus on studying. So I didn’t get to do any motorsport, but took over the running of the business when Dad died and run the team in Australian Supercars,” Ryan explained.

“But now I have got some extra time for me to get into racing myself and it was Sean’s idea to do Fun Cup. It’s similar to the Aussie Racecar Series in Australia and all about enjoyment. I’ve done a GT4 test too and will be doing the Iberian GT4
Championship over the winter in a Mercedes,” he added.

The brothers were joined at Silverstone by ex Team Hard BTCC racer Howard Fuller, who last raced n 2018 for Sean’s team in the inaugural TCR UK Championship.

“It’s about 10 years since I last raced at Silverstone. I was all set to return to the BTCC in 2020 when covid ended it all. I haven’t raced since and just concentrated on work. But having been friends with Sean and the family for years, he had this idea and invited me to join them,” he explained.

The trio finished 16th out of the 26 starters. “I would ideally like to do the Fun Cup Championship and some GT4 races next year, as I really enjoyed it. The first stint was great, but my second not so good as I got a penalty,” Ryan concluded.

TEAM VIKING & URSUS CAPITAL RACING - FUN CUP ENDURANCE UK - SILVERSTONE

The penultimate weekend of UK Fun Cup racing meant a visit to Silverstone, where back in 2023 it was Team Viking on the top step of the podium.

Mark Holme once again had Nick Nunn sharing, and after qualifying they were 10th quickest. “We had good pace and were in the pack with a tow. We made some changes after Brands Hatch, but needed to rely on Tom’s strategy for a good result,” said Holme.

“I did three laps and then came in and we practiced driver changes, all good though,” Nunn added.

In the grid draw they drew 15th place, not great but better than most of the season. It was Nunn taking the wheel for the first stint too.

For the first few laps he was in 14th place, the middle of a huge train of cars, but by lap five he was heading pitwards with a puncture. “Another car ran wide and came back onto the track having contact with Nick, and it took the tyre valve out,” Holme explained.

They rejoined in last place a lap down, but still had the pace to circulate with the leaders, before make the first mandatory stop for Nunn to hand to Holme in 19h place.

Holme had gained another place by the end of the first hour, but by half distance they had clawed their way back to 14th and continued to lap at top six pace.

Nunn took the car into the final hour still 14th, with Holme then taking the final stint to bring the car to the flag. There was a late safety car intervention which closed the field up again, but Holme had made another place just before the caution and by time the green flag was waved for the sprint to the flag, he was 12th.

“We have got to be happy with that result, given our start to the race. We had the pace to run with the top six all day, Nick drove a blinder and was back to his best. Avoided trouble apart from Nick getting a track limit penalty, which was disappointing. The strategy was good enough for our best result of the year, so quite satisfying,” Holme concluded.

With just the Oulton Park double header finale to complete the season, Viking are 12th overall in the Championship and seventh in the Masters Class.

LITTLEWOOD TAKES EUROPEAN AND WORLD RADICAL TITLES

Marcus Littlewood has made it four Radical titles in three years, following a double success in the final European races at Catalunya.
Last year he won the Radical Cup UK with RSR, having won the SR1 Cup the previous year and so the obvious choice for this season was the Radical European Championship.

“When we started the season it was on a shoestring and we didn’t know if we were going to be able to complete it. But after the first three rounds we had some backing, but were relying on not picking up damage. Then at the Nurburgring we got taken out at Turn One on Lap One,” he explained.

In the first rounds at Mugello he qualified on double pole but had to start from the back after failing the ride height, but went from last to first in the first race for his first win, before coming second in race two.

It was double pole at Spa with a much bigger grid, but a safety car intervention wrecked his strategy and he was only seventh in race one. He then stalled at the start of race two before fighting back to eighth.

Paul Ricard was the third weekend and back to winning ways, taking the top step of race one, before coming second in the second having taken double pole again.

But the Nurburgring could have ended the campaign after a big off in race one. But everyone pulled together and despite a bad start he was a winner again in race two.

So Catalunya was the decider and for the first time all season he hadn’t qualified on pole. “It didn’t start well as I had led until the stop in race one and then the dash broke exiting the pits. So it made it down to wire for the last race and I think I had to finish at least fifth,” he explained.

“I was swamped at the start and dropped to about 14th, but fought back to seventh, which proved enough for the title. I feel very relieved now as I won the World Finals title the following day too. So the pressure is off and I am now looking to try and get a budget to move into LMP2,” he concluded.
