🚦 MINOR vs SERIOUS FAULT — DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE? 👀

One small mistake doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve failed your UK driving test! But do you know when a mistake becomes serious? 🤔

🟢 MINOR FAULT (Driving fault)

This is a mistake that doesn’t seriously affect safety.

Examples could include:
✅ Slightly imperfect positioning that remains safe
✅ A minor control mistake that doesn’t affect safety
✅ An observation error that has no significant safety impact

You can still pass with minor faults, provided you don’t make more than 15 driving faults in total.

🔴 SERIOUS FAULT

This is a mistake that could potentially be dangerous or shows that you’re not driving to the required standard.

Examples include:
❌ Poor observation when emerging at a junction
❌ Failing to give way when it’s necessary and safe to do so
❌ Incorrect positioning that creates a significant risk
❌ Losing control of the vehicle in a way that affects safety

🔴 DANGEROUS FAULT

This is when your driving puts you, the examiner, another road user or property in actual danger.

⚠️ Remember: One serious or dangerous fault is enough to fail your test, even if everything else went well!

💡 TOP TIP FROM SECURE PASS DERBY: Don’t panic if you make a small mistake. Stay calm, keep concentrating, and make your next decision safely.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when approaching a roundabout is committing too early! 👀🚗

In this clip, the learner checked the roundabout while still some distance away. At that moment, it appeared clear, but traffic situations can change in seconds.

As we approached the give-way line, I prompted the learner to check again. This time, she spotted a car and she had brake very sharply — a situation that could have become dangerous if they had continued without reassessing.

⚠️ Why is this important?

Braking sharply at the last moment can:
❌ Cause the vehicle behind you to collide with you.
❌ Lead to a loss of control, especially on slippery roads.
❌ Make your approach unstable and increase the risk of a collision with other road users.

✅ What should the learner have done better?

✔️ Approach at a controlled speed: Slow down early enough to assess the roundabout safely.
✔️ Keep observing: Never assume the roundabout will remain clear just because it was clear a few seconds ago.
✔️ Look again near the give-way line: Reassess the traffic before committing to enter.
✔️ Only go when it is safe: Make your final decision based on what is happening NOW, not what you saw earlier.

🎯 Remember: A safe driver doesn’t just look for a gap — they keep checking that the gap is still there!

🚗🇬🇧 WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR UK DRIVING TEST! 👀

Nervous about your practical driving test? Don’t worry! Here’s what you need to know before test day. ✅

🪞 1. Show Me, Tell Me Questions
You’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions — one “Tell Me” question before driving and one “Show Me” question while driving.

🛣️ 2. A Variety of Road Types
Your test route may include:
🔹 Roundabouts
🔹 Junctions and crossroads
🔹 Dual carriageways
🔹 Rural roads
🔹 Residential roads and busy traffic
🔹 Traffic lights and pedestrian crossings

🅿️ 3. One Reversing Manoeuvre
You’ll be asked to complete ONE of the following:
✅ Parallel park at the side of the road
✅ Reverse park into a parking bay
✅ Drive forward into a bay and reverse out
✅ Pull up on the right, reverse for around 2 car lengths, then rejoin traffic when safe

🚨 4. Potential Emergency Stop
An emergency stop may be requested during your test, so be prepared to demonstrate that you can stop safely and promptly when instructed.

🧭 5. Independent Driving
For around 20 minutes, you’ll normally follow a sat nav or traffic signs. The examiner wants to see that you can make safe decisions independently.

⭐ REMEMBER: You don’t need to drive perfectly to pass! You need to show that you can drive safely, responsibly and independently.

🚨 LEARNER DRIVERS — DOES AN ADVISORY 20 MEAN YOU HAVE TO DRIVE AT 20?

👨‍🏫 Learner: “There’s a 20 sign ahead. Do I have to do 20?”

👨‍🏫 Instructor: “Good question… is it advisory or compulsory?”

👨‍🎓 Learner: “Advisory.”

👨‍🏫 Instructor: “Exactly! So what does that mean?”

🔴 COMPULSORY SPEED LIMIT

A compulsory speed limit is shown in a red circle.

For example, a 20 mph speed limit sign means the maximum legal speed is 20 mph.

👉 You must not exceed that limit.

🟡 ADVISORY SPEED

An advisory speed is normally shown in a square sign with a recommended speed, often alongside a warning about a hazard.

For example, you might see 20 mph with a warning for skidding.

That doesn’t mean you’re legally required to travel at exactly 20 mph.

But it DOES mean:

⚠️ Pay attention to the warning.
⚠️ Consider the road and weather conditions.
⚠️ Choose a safe speed.

So if the road is wet, icy, covered in leaves, or you can see a real risk of skidding, you may need to slow down — potentially below 20 mph.

And if conditions are good, that doesn’t give you permission to simply ignore the warning. You still need to drive at a safe and appropriate speed.

👨‍🏫 Instructor tip for learners:

Don’t automatically think:

❌ “I saw 20, so I MUST do 20.”

Instead ask yourself:

✅ “Is it compulsory or advisory?”
✅ “What hazard is the sign warning me about?”
✅ “What are the road and weather conditions?”
✅ “What speed will allow me to deal safely with the hazard?”

🚗💨 Remember:
Red circle = restriction you must obey.
Advisory speed = recommendation to help you deal safely with a hazard.

And one more important point: a safe speed can be LOWER than an advisory speed.

🚗🔧 “TELL ME” QUESTIONS — WHAT COULD THE EXAMINER ASK YOU UNDER THE BONNET?

Before you start your driving test, the examiner may ask you a ‘Tell Me’ question. They want you to explain how you would carry out a vehicle safety check.

Here are some of the common under-the-bonnet checks you need to know 👇

🛢️ 1. Engine oil

Question: “Tell me how you would check the engine oil level.”

👉 Explain that you would:

• Identify the dipstick
• Make sure the car is on level ground
• Check the oil level against the MIN and MAX marks
• Top up if necessary with the correct oil

💧 2. Engine coolant

Question: “Tell me how you would check the engine coolant level.”

👉 Explain that you would:

• Find the coolant expansion tank
• Check the level against the MIN/MAX markings
• Top up if necessary with the correct coolant

⚠️ Never remove the coolant cap when the engine is hot.

🛑 3. Brake fluid

Question: “Tell me how you would check the brake fluid level.”

👉 Find the brake fluid reservoir and check that the level is between the MIN and MAX markings.

💡 LEARNER TIP

Don’t just memorise the words.

Understand what you’re checking, where you’re checking it and what you’re looking for.

And remember — the exact checks can vary depending on the vehicle you’re using for your test.

🚗🚲 OVERTAKING A CYCLIST — HOW MUCH ROOM SHOULD YOU LEAVE?

If you’re driving at up to 30mph, you should leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking a cyclist.

If you’re travelling over 30mph, give even more space — think about the speed you’re travelling at and the conditions around you.

But here’s the important bit 👇

Don’t just squeeze past because you think there’s enough room.

✅ Check your mirrors
✅ Look well ahead
✅ Signal if appropriate
✅ Give the cyclist plenty of space
✅ Be prepared to slow down or wait if it’s not safe to overtake

🚲 Why so much room?

Cyclists may need to move around potholes, drains, parked cars, debris or other hazards. They can also be affected by wind or turbulence from passing vehicles.

As a driver, you are protected by a car — the cyclist isn’t.

If there’s not enough room, wait. Getting there a few seconds later is far better than putting someone at risk.

👨‍🏫 Learner driver tip:
Don’t think “Can I squeeze through?” Think “Can I overtake safely while giving the cyclist plenty of space?”

🚗💨 Safe driving isn’t about getting there first — it’s about getting there safely.

07/10/2026

👨‍🏫 From an examiner’s point of view, this could result in a serious fault because the learner’s move-off has affected another road user and potentially created a situation where the other driver has had to take action to get around them.

The learner checks the mirrors and looks around before moving off, so the observation itself appears to be there.

However, the problem comes when the learner moves off too slowly.

As the learner starts moving, a vehicle approaches from behind and has to overtake the learner.

✅ What should the learner have done better?

After completing the necessary observations and deciding it was safe to move, the learner should have moved off promptly and made reasonable progress, rather than crawling away unnecessarily.

Had the learner moved off more positively and continued at an appropriate speed, the following vehicle may not have needed to overtake.

🚦 Remember:
Good observation is only part of a safe move-off.
Check → decide → move off promptly → make suitable progress.

👀 Would the examiner mark this as a serious fault?
