CAMBELT 🔧

This VW T5 was in with us for a cambelt and water pump replacement as part of its preventative maintenance.

The cambelt is one of those jobs you really don’t want to leave to chance. If it fails, the resulting engine damage can turn a routine maintenance job into a very expensive repair.

While carrying out the cambelt replacement, we also replace the associated components required for the job and the water pump, giving the customer peace of mind that everything has been dealt with together.

Not sure when your cambelt was last changed?

Send us your registration, mileage and any service history you have, and we can check what’s required for your vehicle.

How good does this look 👌

An ATEK pop-top fitted and colour coded on this awesome 4x4 MAN TGE MWB.

The colour coding gives it a really clean, factory-style finish while adding a huge amount of usable space inside.

And it’s not just the roof…

This TGE is also running not one, but TWO Thule Omnistor awnings, giving covered access on both sides of the van. Perfect for a proper adventure setup.

A seriously cool base vehicle with some seriously useful upgrades.

Thinking about adding a pop-top or awning setup to your Crafter, TGE or Sprinter? Get in touch and we can talk through the options.

Creaking when steering? This is why it’s worth getting it checked. 🔧

This customer brought their van in after noticing a creaking noise while turning the steering.

After a road test, the noise was clearly coming from the top mount area, so we carried out a closer inspection.

As you can see in the video, the retaining ring on the strut was missing. This meant the assembly wasn’t sitting as it should, with the spring loading into the rubber mount and compressing it against the body of the van.

Thankfully, the customer brought it in before the problem developed any further, so we can get it rectified relatively quickly and get the suspension sitting correctly again.

If you start hearing creaks, knocks or unusual noises when steering, don’t leave it until it gets worse — an early inspection can often prevent a much larger repair.

📩 Got a noise you’re unsure about? Send us your registration and a description of the problem.

Something didn’t sound right on this VW T5… 🔧

After carrying out some conversion work on the van, we noticed an unusual noise coming from the DSG gearbox area.

The noise was most noticeable at idle and reduced when the engine revs were increased, so we carried out further checks and traced the fault to the dual-mass flywheel.

As you can see and hear in the video, there was a significant amount of play in the flywheel.

A worn dual-mass flywheel can create knocking, rattling and vibration, and if left unchecked can put additional stress on the gearbox and surrounding drivetrain components.

Catching faults like this early can prevent a much bigger repair later on.

If your Transporter has developed an unusual rattle, vibration or noise around the gearbox area, don’t ignore it — get it checked.

📩 Send us your registration and a description of the fault and we can arrange an inspection.

What a transformation on this stunning VW T6.1 👌

This conversion was completed with us in two stages.

The first stage included the pop-top, windows and electrical system, before the van returned for the full finishing package.

The final setup includes:

• Remio pop-top
• Full furniture and cabinetry
• 112cm GlideMotion bed system
• Top-loading fridge
• Victron charging system
• Hidden Victron inverter
• Full black-themed finishes throughout

One of the key parts of the brief was creating enough usable rear storage for mountain bikes, which is where the GlideMotion system really comes into its own. The bed can be moved forward to open up a huge amount of space behind without losing the flexibility of the camper layout.

We also tucked away a Victron inverter, allowing the customer to charge e-bikes directly from the leisure electrical system and solar setup while away.

A really well thought-out conversion, great customers to work with and a finish we’re really pleased with.

A returning customer of ours since 2022 came back to us this week with a problem with their heated seats not working. 🔧

After carrying out some testing, we traced the faults to the seat heater elements themselves.

On the passenger seat, the base heater element had failed, while on the driver’s seat both the base and upper backrest elements were faulty.

The failed elements had burnt out internally and were showing an open circuit, meaning they were no longer able to heat.

To repair the fault, we removed the existing seat covers, replaced the failed heater elements and then refitted everything back into place.

It’s always great to see customers who have trusted us with their vehicles for several years coming back when something needs attention.

Got an electrical or interior fault you need looking at? Get in touch with your vehicle details and we’ll see how we can help.

Grinding noise when braking? Don’t ignore it. 🔧

This Ford Transit Connect came into us after the customer noticed a grinding noise when braking.

Once inspected, we found the brake pads had worn completely through the friction material and were down to the metal backing plates. At this point, the metal starts contacting the brake disc directly, causing significant damage to the disc as well.

What could have been a straightforward set of brake pads had now become a larger brake repair.

If you hear grinding, scraping or unusual noises when braking, get the vehicle checked as soon as possible.

Regular servicing and brake inspections are important because they help catch wear before it reaches this stage — saving money and, most importantly, keeping the vehicle safe.

Need your brakes checked? Send us your registration and we can get you booked in.

When was your vehicle last serviced? 🔧

Keeping on top of servicing is one of the simplest ways to avoid unnecessary wear, breakdowns and larger repair bills later on.

As a general rule, we recommend servicing at least once a year or around every 10,000 miles, although the correct interval can vary depending on the vehicle and manufacturer schedule.

It’s also important that the correct parts, oil and fluids are used for your specific vehicle. Using the wrong specification can affect performance, reliability and, in some cases, manufacturer requirements.

At Hide Away Campervans, we service and maintain VW, Audi, SEAT, Škoda and Ford vehicles from our workshop near Waterlooville.

Not sure when yours is due? Send us your registration and mileage and we can advise.
