Latest from the Woodford Trailers HSA Speed Championship - Glorious Goodwood: The sun shone down as Bognor Regis Motor Club smoothly ran its Regis Sprint meeting, around the fast and challenging Goodwood Circuit. Chris Hancox and Keith Weller enjoyed a royal battle in class S1; Chris was unable to better his T1 time of 103.22 as the day went on, but this proved to be just enough to hold Keith at bay, finishing with a time just 0.1s behind. Anthony Earl (Caterham Seven Supersport) couldn’t quite do enough to take the class win, but improved throughout the day to hold second, for 14 HSA points. But the standaout HSA performance once again fell to

Justin Andrews in the Impreza who only needed one timed run to take the class win by a commanding margin, and with it, 18 HSA points.

Still full of early season enthusiasm, Woodford Trailers British Sprint Championship competitors made the first annual journey to the fantastically well-organised BARC Wales Pembrey Summer Sprint weekend. The weather promised some respite from the recent tropical heatwave and this thankfully arrived on cue, as the usual queueing outside the gates to get access to the circuit would otherwise have been unbearable. This would have been particularly problematic for Steve Miles who, having been testing his Van Diemen at Llandow Circuit en route, saw his drive-by-wire motor actuator arm self-destruct, requiring emergency repairs to be carried in the queue, with components and help being provided by fellow competitor Steve Broughton.

Joining in with BSC competitors for the first time in a while was returning competitor Craig Sampson in his Vauxhall-powered works SBD Westfield mod prod car, dipping his toe in the Challenge Cup as well as Victor Porrett, nephew of Championship elder stateman Grahame, in his Empire EVO who was just gaining experience. Ex-Challenge Cup competitor Phil Montgomery Smith was also competing and mixing it with the BSC crowd, having made the long trip from St Austell in Cornwall. Pete Goulding was again missing as he recuperates from recent knee replacement surgery, while Terry Holmes was busy preparing for his forthcoming holiday.

Practice and qualifying for run-off one saw Grahame Harden still struggling with binding brake issues, despite having replaced all of the brake components on his Force TA SL since Blyton. Steve Miles’ emergency repairs didn’t last very long, so further assistance was sought from Steve Broughton and now Craig Sampson, who between them were able to save the day. The Mike Taylor / Cathy Sewart Mygale had developed a major oil leak, the cause of which was eluding them until Graham Porrett spotted a popped-out grommet which was pushed home to stem the flow. Steve Brown had a scare by spinning 360° at the Hatchets hairpin on his first attempt, but stayed on track and made the cut. Simon Wallis managed to lose a front wing end plate in the pit lane but it was sadly not able to be refitted, having been run over by John Loudon who was following him and mistook it as being something of insignificance.

Run-off one again saw the formidable Ethan Faulkner heading the timing sheets with a new class record, followed by Steve Broughton who would have also broken it, had it not been for Ethan’s speed. Team Faulkner were two members down due to holidaying in Canada, but Ethan still delivered and reported back. Steve Miles’ issues now seemed to be behind him, and he bagged an impressive third, followed by John Loudon in the smallest-engined car of the field, who was regretting not having hit the apex at Hatchets hairpin on both laps, which had cost him time. Steve Brown followed in fifth, having made sure he finished, given his near miss in qualifying. Grahame Harden was enjoying the virtues of downforce for the first time in his racing career, and set a new sub-1700cc sports libre record, even though being hindered by binding brakes. Cathy Sewart and Mike Taylor were having a close battle in their shared Mygale for seventh and eighth, reaping the rewards of their winter developments. Simon Wallis seemed unhindered by his lack of a front wing endplate and of dash display and finished ninth, narrowly ahead of Porrett senior who was bemused to be going slower, despite having more horsepower than last year. Carole Torkington rounded off the points scorers in eleventh, still somewhat nervous about her OMS’s handling following a recent pushrod failure at Blyton two weeks prior.

Run-off two saw Ethan Faulkner again head Steve Broughton home, but by now the track had marginally gone off and times were generally slower. An oil leak had materialised on Ethan’s car and overnight investigations and temporary repairs were to immediately ensue once the affected area had become cool enough to touch. Steve Brown proved to be the exception to the rule and produced his best time of the day to finish third, with John Loudon again in fourth while Steve Miles slipped to fifth, despite no obvious degradation to how the car felt. Grahame Harden also proved an exception and again broke his class record in sixth. Mike Taylor came seventh in the shared Mygale, but sadly, this was the last time the car was to complete a run as a major accident ensued when Cathy took the wheel, apexing too early at the Esses and exiting onto the grass, spiralling into the outer barriers and badly damaging both ends of the car. Thankfully, Cathy was unharmed and the car will be repairable given time. Simon Wallis missed out on gaining a place by a mere three-hundredths of a second, but managed to stay ahead of the slowly improving Graham Porrett and Carole Torkington in ninth and tenth respectively. A point of note was that Philip Montgomery Smith would have been a real threat for top honours had he been registered in the Championship as he was producing some epic times in his supercharged OMS 2000. Sadly for him, however, his OMS parted company with a front wheel and he retired early from the weekend.

Sunday’s concluding rounds of the 2026 Woodford Trailers Motorsport UK British Sprint Championship around Blyton Park’s Outer Circuit delivered two fiercely contested run-offs and another extension to Ethan Faulkner’s championship lead — but not before reigning champion Steve Broughton reminded everyone exactly why he could be a threat.

Heavy overnight rain left the circuit damp for the morning runs, with standing water at the daunting Port Froid section catching out several drivers in practice. By the opening qualifying run, conditions had improved significantly.

Broughton struck first in round nine aboard his DJ Firehawk CT004, edging Faulkner by just 0.07 seconds in one of the closest finishes of the season so far. The Force TA driver had looked rapid all day but was finally denied the top spot after a faultless run from the reigning champion, who continues to refine development of the Firehawk package.

Faulkner and his support crew regrouped quickly over lunch, despite what was diplomatically described in the paddock as “sausage-related catering issues!” A new bump rubber delivered from Force transformed the car for the afternoon run-off and Faulkner responded emphatically, smashing the Outer Circuit class record with a stunning 54.41second run in round ten.

Even then, victory was anything but secure. Steven Brown produced arguably the drive of the day in the RLM Empire Evo2, finishing just 0.08 seconds behind after overcoming a catalogue of technical dramas. A broken plenum chamber strap in practice, overnight brake work and an air leak that left him stuck in third gear during the first run-off failed to deter Brown, whose elusive first outright BSC run-off victory still remains tantalisingly close.

Graham Blackwell continued his recent resurgence with two excellent fourth places in the turbocharged Mygale FF200. Revised launch control modifications appeared to work well and the increasingly confident Blackwell ended the day strongly.

Stephen Miles continued his consistent championship challenge with fifth places in both run-offs, experimenting with a car setup that now swings between understeer and oversteer as development continues ahead of Pembrey later this month. John Loudon also impressed again as his confidence in the diminutive 1.0-litre Force TA continues to build.

Elsewhere, Cathy Sewart narrowly outpaced partner Mike Taylor in the first run-off after Taylor suffered a wild launch twitch, before the positions reversed later in the day. Simon Wallis recovered from a spectacular 105mph practice spin at Port Froid to post his best time in the final run despite battling battery issues.

Rain returned within minutes of the final car finishing as the championship headed onward to Pembrey on 30–31 May, with Faulkner now holding a commanding 39-point lead over Miles at the top of the standings.

Longton and District Motor Club delivered a slickly run meeting at Blyton Park on Saturday as rounds seven and eight of the 2026 Woodford Trailers Motorsport UK British Sprint Championship produced another commanding display from Championship leader Ethan Faulkner. Competing on the Eastern layout, drivers were greeted by a cold start before bright sunshine through the morning gave way to thicker cloud, with rain arriving shortly after the final Top 12 run-off.

Faulkner was once again the benchmark throughout the day in his 1.6 Force TA. Despite insisting he had undertaken no simulator preparation for the event — a claim met with widespread scepticism in the paddock — the Northern Irishman looked immediately at home around Blyton. He stormed to victory in both run-offs and also lowered the outright Eastern layout record with a stunning 57.74-second effort in round seven. Even with track conditions slowing in the afternoon, he remained untouchable in round eight with a 59.66-second run. The double victory further extended his already commanding championship advantage.

Behind him, Stephen Miles enjoyed one of his strongest weekends of the season in the Van Diemen RF96mm. Running increased rear downforce for the meeting, Miles looked confident and composed all day and secured third and fourth place finishes in the two run-offs. Crucially, the points haul elevated him to second in the championship standings by the end of the day.

Steven Brown’s weekend was rather more dramatic. The RLM Empire Evo2 driver was sensational in the opening run-off, taking second place overall and breaking the two-litre racing car class record. However, battery problems then threatened to derail his afternoon and initially prevented him from contesting the second class run-off. In a display of paddock camaraderie, Faulkner loaned Brown a replacement battery, allowing him back out later in the session, where he promptly reclaimed the class record and shuffled Miles down a position in the final classification.

Reigning British Sprint Champion Steve Broughton returned for his first BSC appearance of the season and immediately demonstrated that he remains a major contender. Still dialling in the setup of his DJ Firehawk CT004, Broughton improved steadily through the day and secured fourth place in round seven, before climbing to second in round eight, finishing less than a second and a half behind Faulkner.

John Loudon also enjoyed a productive meeting aboard his 1.0 Force TA. Having worked hard on improving his starts after recent events, Loudon’s launches became progressively sharper as the day developed. The improvement translated into sixth and fifth places in the run-offs and helped consolidate his position near the top of the championship standings.

Graham Blackwell continued development work on his turbocharged Mygale FF200 and arrived at Blyton armed with revised launch software, refined using an AI agent. The changes appeared to deliver gains off the line, although persistent understeer still hampered his ultimate pace. Nevertheless, Blackwell remained competitive with fifth and sixth places in the run-offs.

Grahame Harden showed encouraging signs that the brake issues that had been troubling him at Anglesey are gradually being resolved. The Force TA-SL driver recorded consistent performances, with seventh and eighth place finishes across the two scoring runs.

Simon Wallis endured a frustrating day mechanically. Problems sealing new Pirelli tyres to the rims forced him to compete using a mixture of Pirelli and Avon rubber on the OMS 3000M. Despite the compromised setup, Wallis battled through to eighth and ninth place finishes.

There was mixed fortune in the shared Mygale EcoBoost camp of Mike Taylor and Cathy Sewart. Taylor suffered an early setback when he spun in the first qualifying session and damaged the car’s floor, leaving him unable to score in round seven. He recovered later in the day to finish seventh in round eight. Sewart, meanwhile, was delighted with her own progress, improving significantly through the event and taking ninth and tenth place finishes in the run-offs.

Graham Porrett’s day ended memorably, if not entirely as planned, when he spun backwards across the finish line during the second run-off in his Mygale FF200. Fortunately, no serious damage resulted.

The absence of Peter Goulding, who arrived at Blyton second in the championship but is currently recovering from knee replacement surgery, was keenly felt. Goulding is hopeful of returning for the next event at Mallory Park, but his absence allowed rivals to capitalise in the standings.

After eight rounds, Faulkner now leads the championship on 210 points from Miles on 180, with Loudon close behind on 176 as the title race heads into its next phase.
